I have an HP 8550N that is experiencing faded black printout on every 10th page or so. I have replaced the black toner, and printed a config page. It shows that I have 174000 prints on the machine and that the transfer kit and the fuser kit are at 99% of life remaining. I am not sure what to replace as I am new to this particular printer and I have no real maintainance history. If there is anyone out there who has seen this issue, please tell me what you did to fix it or what part I need to order. Thanks

Check the cleaning roller, and ICL arm. Also, is the plate on the drum drive gear metal? If not, it may be cracked.
You will need a PEP Kit. And the ICL kit.
PEP Kit-RG9-1495
ICL Arm Kit-RG9-1527
Both have instructions for installation.

Michael,

Do you think that this printer is even worth all the work? I am trying to decide if it would be better to reccomend a new buy...

Thanks for the suggestion. My drum gear is plastic, not metal, but it looks intact. It is every 12th page for 2 pages. We confirmed that with a 140 page manual printout this morning.

Depends on your print needs. It is a good production color printer, and is no more expensive to run than any of the newer models. Worth the effort as long as it gets a complete
thourough cleaning. Many sensors you cannot see unless it is torn down. Toner blown throughout this unit is normal, and it is a users responsibility to conduct proper maintenence. In-line architecture is better, but has it's own peculiarities.
