Hp 7960 Always says out of paper when it grabbed the paper already and paper is in spool of printer and the just before it prints on the paper it says out of paper then I select ok on the printer then a error message comes up and says paper jam (but there is no jam!) then I just hit ok on printer and it will spit the paper out then grabs another piece of paper and will print on it?????????? Im not sure why it just started doing this for a week now it never fails for the past week it will always do this before it will print on the paper. Any advice and help would be great Ive searched on the forun and did not see anyone having this problem.
Thanks So much!

I had someone recently who had a similar problem.

The paper had "slid back" in the tray, indicating that it was a different size, and since the paper wasn't under the pickup roller, it wouldn't grab it, and therefore report a paper jam.

Always check the "obvious" first.

the paper does not slide back I watch it and the paper goes in like normal and when it starts to print it will give me the message out of paper with the paper in correct spot ready to print. It will say out of paper then I hit ok then will say paper jam then I hit ok then it will spit the paper out grab another blank sheet and print on it ok. It dies this EVERY time when I print something from the pc or even it I print directly from the printer like to print a test page or to calibrate printer. No matter what I do it still does the same thing give the error messages I have to hit ok then it will spit out the paper then print on the 2nd sheet it pulls.

To answer the first question when I print it pulls the paper all the way up just like normal, then just before it prints it says out of paper "load paper then press ok" I tried what you said open the back and see it I can pull it out from the back. But I cant because the paper it fully around the roller ready to print.

the second question....it is a single document I print and it always does this but I tried printing multiple pages and it will do it at first (the same process the error messages) after hitting ok then ok again it will spit out the first page and not print on it the will take the 2nd page and print all pages with no problem.

Also I tried printing single pages multiple times so the single documents would be in the pending and the same thing happened it would first start off with the error messages print on the 2nd page and then it would print all the single documents in pending with no problem. Weird huh???

Ok, it's been a while since i was a printer tech, but let me take a stab...
Sounds like either you have the wrong size paper set up somewhere (either in the app, on the printer or at the paper tray). If memory serves, the printer looks at what size paper it "expects" and then sort of calculates (or just knows) how long a sheet of paper of that size takes to pass through it's paper path. If it takes too long, or indeed, passes through too fast, it will freak out and assume something went wrong (PAPER JAM!). I'm sure my hamfisted explanation is worng here somewhere, someone please put it into the proper terms!

You may also want to check that the paper sensors aren't clogged up with gunk, I've seen that cause paper handling errors in the past.

Ok I just printed from the 4x6 tray and set everything to 4x6 and it did the same thing pulled paper up and then said out of paper??????

I went to the thread and tryed it but it didnt work either. Thanks

Im thinking maybe I might need to get a new printer.

Maybe try clenining the rubber feed rollers at the (i think!) rear door? use a damp cloth, if that seems to improve it, try grabbing some of this it works wonders on a multitude of sins!

I cleaned the rollers yesterday with a roller cleaner I already had. That didnt work either. Ive been trying to fix this problem for 3 days now. what happened is the cartridge clip broke and I had to buy a new one for the black I replaced it and then screwed it back onto the board I didnt touch anything else in the printer and now all the sudden Im havening the out of paper and paper jam problem. So I dont know if its coincidence or if I did something when replacing the broken clip.

aha..the plot thickens ;)
I'd say that you inadvertently disturbed something when replacing the clip. Coul dit be feasible that something fell inside the mechanism while you were repairing it (bit of the old clip per chance?). When you screwed "it" back into the board (i'm not 100% sure what "it" is), could you have maybe over tightened it? Does the head still move freely along the carriage? did any gunk/funk get sloshed around during the repair process? (like old cruddy ink deposits mixed with dust..they always seme to do an execellent job of creating weird errors!).

Just some food for thought..keep going!

It is meaning the cartridge holder sorry i dont know the tech term it hods the 3 cartridges then I had to screw it back onto the computer looking board (the thing that reads the cartridge) but Im going to unscrew it and screw it in again. It does move freely right now though.

Try this link It will walk you through the basics of cleaning out your inkjet printer. It's true to say that at least 80% of the job is putting the darn thing back together correctly after you replace something. I just ran out of fingers and toes trying to count the number of times i had to disassemble a deskjet after "fixing" it to tweak or adjust something back into tolerance (usually those nasty platen bars on the old 690C's..ahh, those were the days!).

Thanks so much I will try it and let you know. :)

Good luck, and if all else fails, always remember, enormous pleasure can be derived from removing the offending piece of technology from the premises and proceeding to thoroughly beat the binary poop out of it with something large and heavy! ;)

LOL Yeah I have thought of doing that a time or two ;) Reminds me of the movie Office Space! hehe I cleaned the 7960 and still no luck :( So I guess I have to look into another one soon but it looks like all the new printers are like crap. I was looking at the hp c7180 or maybe the canon mp830. Do you no of any new releases coming soon that will be better?

So I dont know if its coincidence or if I did something when replacing the broken clip.

I would say it's not coincidence.

CorruptedLogic is probably right... something is still in there, blocking a paper sensor. (the information that you tried to fix it yourself when the thread first started would have been most helpful... ;-)
