I have the all-in-one printer I purchased about six months ago.
More than half of the time I print, it starts to print then stops. This happens usually with Words docs and Internet Exp 7. A window pops up with "System Error, you may need to restart Windows".
I have tried everything, including drivers, reload software, turn off/on, unplug/replug, blah-blah.
I can not get past this error.
Any help is appreciated.
I have Win XP Media Center, Office 2003.

Are there any other printers not in use that are installed? Uninstall them along with their drivers. Have you tried replacing the USB cable?

The printer should still be under warranty but I would not wish HP's consumer support upon ANYBODY...but when you call in, do not choose the "home user" option, use the "small business", sometimes the support is better, but many are now lumping them together.

It could be an internal problem with the firmware. Have you checked HP's site for more current firmware or drivers? Is there an error code given when connectivity fails? Stopping/restarting the print spooler service might help.

Other than that you can hope for an RMA, it's a new enough product. Good luck.

No other printers, although the old driver may be still installed...I will check that.
HP support has been very poor. I have been put on hold for so long the phone stuck to me.
I have checked firmware and drivers. Connectivity is good, stopping/restarting the print spooler service has not helped.
Thank you for your response.

Are there any clues in the system EventLog?

[surprise] As a rule, before I make ANY support call, I use a speakerphone so I can work or whatever whilst on interminable hold. As a last resort I use my cellphone which has a speakerphone option and finite battery time. Battery dies, support call terminated.

I don't see clues in the system EventLog. It is puzzeling.
I tried the HP online support. I sent them an email...no response. I logged in for live chat, no response. The chat sat there for 15 minutes, then it logged me out.

Try this for your problem. Go to the printers folder, right click on the HP printer and select properties for the drop down. On the printer driver genral tab press the print test page. On the test page is a list of all the dll files the printer uses. If one of these is left over from a previous printer this could be your problem. I would delete the printer, then search out each one of the listed dll's and delete them as you find them. Then re-install the printer. See if that helps.
