Hi all,

I have a HP LaserJet 4MV. It keeps reporting a paper jam even though there is no paper stuck in the machine when I remove the tray and toner. All I do is open the cover and close it again to clear the error from the display.

I send it a test page and it attempts to print the page for a split second but then immediately reports a paper jam. There is a slight squeaking noise just before it reports the jam.

I think the actually problem relates to the paper not being picked up properly rather than a jam.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can try to resolve this?

Thanks in advance.

Gavin.

I would really give it another look through... often there is just a little piece of paper inside that you can barely see...

I would really take the fusor, toner, tray out and give it one more 360 look... I've had to use a frosting spreader in the past to get out bad (hidden) jams. (Also pci slot covers work well).

As for the pickup possibly not working.. this would not cause a jam message but you could possibly purchase a maintence kit and replace the pickup rollers.

Clean the pickup roller. The fact that you can clear the error message (Is it error 13?) most likely points to the paper not being picked up in time.If the error was un clearable then it would be an obstruction in the paper path or a defective paper sensor.

Hi 1043,

I have cleaned the pickup roller with no success. You are right in thinking I can clear the error. It goes away when you open and close the printer cover and it is error 13.

Do you have any other suggestions? Could it be that the pickup roller needs replacing?

Thanks.

Gavin.

The pickup rollers get hard and slick on this printer and will cause the paper to not be picked out of the bottom tray. The only fix is to replace the pickup rollers. There are two of them on the bottom of the printer. To replace them you need to remove the the top cover, the right side cover, the black metal plate that is located directly below where the toner cartridge is located and then the feed roller clutch assembly. The pickup rollers are held in place by C Clips that just snap off and on. I hope this helps.

If that printer has two trays, sometimes a piece of paper can get stuck between the printer and tray one or between the two trays.

Hi,

It only has one tray. I have used this unfortunate situation to replace the printer. I know it’s an easy get out but I have approval to replace it with a 4000TN so it is on the way!

Thank you for all the help.

Gavin.
