I user I support is trying to print onto dividers using the manual feed tray. The first 5 or 6 feed just fine, but the last 2 or 3 pages all get picked up at once. I replaced the pickup roller and cleaned around the area, no luck. Also someone suggested I clean the separation pad (the lower part) that also grabs the paper and has a felt piece on it, but how do i go about cleaning it? It looks ok to me. Any other ideas?

thanks!
Bill

It sounds like you may have to replace the separation pad and if you have not yet changed the transfer roller. I've had this problem with a 2100 where it would work fine until the last 2-3 pages. It would grab all 2-3 pagces and when I replaced the separation pad and transfer roller it fixed my problem. You may not have to change the transfer roller, but I do suggest you change the separation pad.

Good luck.

Will do, thanks for the help comptek. Do you know where I can find a manual for the HP 4050 that would walk me through replacing the separation pad?

It's not so hard to do. First you remove the 2 front covers of the MP-tray. Then you remove the pick-up roller with a scewdriver. If you look than under the seperation path, there are three springs. Remove carefully the 2 on the outside. Now you can click out the seperation kit.

TIP: If you don't have a new one, turn the rubber arround. The upside becomes than the underside. Clean it and glue it back on the holder.

Let me say first that I have NO stake in this company and receive NOTHING in return. That being said, Durkpiet, try
going to and search their database. They have a good supply of exploded parts diagrams, parts lists, etc. ( got MY fanny out of a jam
on more than one occasion! )

Good luck.

Ok, first of, HP doesn't officially make the sep pad available as a seperate orderable piece for the LJ 4000 or 4050. In the 4100 line, they made it easily replaceable. HP's official stance is that you replace the Tray 1 Pickup unit and that will get you a new sep pad. But, being a tech that works on these printer, There are replacement pads with the arms available. Once these are in, then the sep pads become replacable. I typically keep these items in stock, and have replaced many of these.

HP doesn't? I just ordered and installed a separation pad for a 4050.... <shrug>

Replacing the separation pad is kinda putsy the first time you do it... but it's not difficult. I think the worst part was getting the springs back in there properly (there are three of them under the separation pad).

There are excellent instructions at which include photos and how-tos of replacing the separation pad. Hope it helps. :)

Just my $0.02
