I recently purchased a 2824 Gigabit switch for our comapany. I installed it last night and tried testing the speeds. however when I ftp from one server to the other I can only hit 15MB/s Both these servers have intel 1000MT network cards. All are connected at gigabit speeds. Why so slow?

Are you using the native ftp client or some other software. If some other software, are there any bottlenecks or speed settings in the software? How big is the file you need to transfer? Can you copy or move a between shares at higher speeds?

also, what is the utilization of the switch?

The switch utilizes 29 percent when I ftp and it was at 37 percent when I started the file copy from windows explorer however that dropped to 18 percent. I am copying a 22 gig file.

What kind of speeds do you get with smaller files? the problem could just be with the computers involved in the transfer. it takes time to process the files (esp large ones) and packetize them. i have never had very good speeds with very large files. although gb links were faster than mb links.

I havent tested a small file , but the servers are dell 2850 each with gig cards.
