Hi,

Don't know if it's possible. But whould it be possible to stop some request for a name to IP translation's?
In other words to implement an unwanted sites list and have it stopped at the DNS request on my local Win2k3.

Hans

Use your HOSTS file (no extenstion) located in:

C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc

For example, to block the domain foo.bar.baz add a line to your HOSTS file like this:

127.0.0.1 foo.bar.baz

This should effectively block your system from accessing foo.bar.baz.

-a6m1n0

You can build a Zone in DNS and have it do the same thing. But this way would be a one location change instead of each PC.

I would look in to a Web Filter.

Hi Checked the hosts file. But that doesn't work.
Requests to my dns server are granted. Looks that there's no relation between a DNS request and the hosts file.

Building Zondes .... Thanks but I need more time to understand that one.

Web Filter: any suggestions?

Hans.

Question for Web Filter: How big is your environment? PC's and servers that need to be controlled?

Sorry, I had to chime in here. There is a direct relationship between your hosts file and DNS queries. When you make an entry in your hosts file it is immediately loaded into your DNS resolver cache. Post the entries that you've made in your hosts file. They should look like this:
127.0.0.1 127.0.0.1

My environment is limited to a single server and 5 PC's.

Free. Such a small environment, maybe all u need. You will need 5 email address to get 5 licenses...

I use it at home for my kids.

Or you could use opendns from opendns.org as the resolver on your internet connection. Also has a bunch of other filtering features and it's free.

opendns.org

That looks very interesting.
Checked the part on the forwarder on win2k3.
Think I’ll give it a try.

Thanks.
