How to write a windows programe.

I know the basics of writing programmes for dos and wish to write my first windows programe but I can't find any documentation on the subject.

Can anyone suply me with the Format, Structure and Examples that I require to go beyond the basics of designing dos programmes using IOstream and as such.

I have been searching for and studying books on c++ and c for several years and it is with great dissapointment that I must report that I have only been able to find about three books which I deem suitable for beginners or users of high level languages, of those books previously mentioned none of them provided help with the use of objects and classes beyond the ones necessary for printing text on the screen or recieving input from a user. The books which it has been my great pleasure to find do not reveal any information reguarding windows programming.

I have also expanded my search to include the internet and it's vast resources which I am sure if you were to perform the same search you would also find provide the same amount of information as the books.

Time and time again I have consulted other sources but sadly have found that they are catered for people who already have a low level language within their vocabulary.

The frustration which is currently associated with my dilema is overwhelming and as such any assistance which you may find it in your heart to provide would be greeted with overwhelming excitement.

Borland Builder 3.0 standard edition. Look in large book stores. comes with a cd and book. great start for windows programming. stay away from visual c++.

Thankyou for responding though unfortunately I do not have the time to respond in full as I am about to take A trip back to Wollongong today but Thumppeteer I have taken your advice and I am currently awaiting the arival of the Microsoft Visual Basic cd's. Butthead I believe the book you are suggesting is the manual for Borland C++ Standard Edition. I have in the past scourered several librarys for the Manual without any success although I have not been able to find the time to browse the book stores on the subjuct I can only hope that an opertunity will present it's-self (coloquial language, the refuge of the time deficient).

I have found the Sams "Teach yourself XXX in 24 hours" type series to be the best and easiest introduction to learning a new language.
They also have the 21 Days (or so) books which, while more expensive will remain useful as a reference long after you become comfortable with the language.

Thankyou for your quick response enigma174, it has been only three day's since my last update and usually it can take upto a few months to get a response due to the vast amount of messages on this notice board.
I believe I know of the tutorial you are refering to and as I recall it is an ideal lesson for a beginner programmer though I do not recall it having any information which could be of use to an advanced programmer. If I am mistaken please correct my error and refer me to the exact url.

go to winprog.com and d/l the Forger's tutorial. It is a fairly short tutorial that goes step by step and very thorough. It is in HTML format, and not real long. He has all of the source files that he references with it.

The copy of borland builder that I got had a book and the CD with the builder software I think that it cost about $35 dollars. I started windows programming here. as for the visual c++. Compile the default hello world program and check the exe file size. I probably didnot have the options set properly but still a 1 meg exe to display hello world. Please!!!!!
