I'm running FC4, and I'm looking for a way to view who's currently downloading from our FTP server (and what they're downloading). Did some looking around, but couldn't find anything. Any help is much appreciated.

Also on a related note, I'd like to throttle our FTP server to only allow it to use about half of our 1.5mbps line. I'm using vsftpd, so I put

local_max_rate = 98304

in vsftpd.conf, but that line wouldn't allow the ftp service to start until I removed it. Any tips are greatly appreciated!

You might have logging already enabled if you have the folowing statement in vsftpd.conf.

[tt]xferlog_enable=YES[/tt]

If not, add it.

Look for these statements next.

[tt]xferlog_file=/var/log/vsftpd.log[/tt]
[tt]xferlog_std_format=YES[/tt]

The first one shows the default location the second one tells the server to log in the standard format.

You can look at the log to see what the uses are downloading and what credentials were used.

As for the error did you check your [tt]/var/log/messages[/tt] file for any clues?
