Hi all!

Just bought a 80GB Maxtor D/Max+9 ATA133/7200 8MB but it was not being seen as a drive through my computer. It was seen in the bios and the device manager but was not seen as f:.

This seemed to be due to it not being initialised which should have been done by maxtor i presume so i went into the command prompt and created a primary partition and then formatted it as ntfs. It only shows 31.49 gig so any ideas how to use all the 80gig?

Thanks

You didn't mention your OS, but I'm if its XP, it will only create and format FAT32 partitions to a maximum of 32GB. Either create the partition under Windows 98 Fdisk and Format, or create it with XP, but as a NTFS partition.

Thanks for replying so quickly guys. Drive didn't come with any software and can't access the internet for a while. Also i forgot mention that i am using XP SP1a but did format the hdd as NTFS so guess i'll have to wait until i can get back onto the net to download the maxtor file.

Thanks anyway guys

Hello Krest,
Did the bios detect the full 80gig? If not, then look on the back of the crive and see if it has a jumper
for a 32gig limit and disable it. Your mobo may require a bios update (if available).

If you use the Maxtor overlay software, be aware you may have problems later if you need to move it/retrieve from it in another machine, or something goes wrong with it (the drive won't be visible to normal processes). I'd go with mainegeek (if you haven't got the 32GB limiter enabled) - check out your mobo's manufacturer's site - there may be a bios upgrade to get over the 32GB limit you appear to have (its a common mobo limitation or older boards). Another alternative would to buy a PCI controller card to connect the drive to.

i assume that ur BIOS can support large HDD.

1. if u r using a bootdisk to partition ur 80GB HDD,

Check this out:

2. U can connect ur NEW Maxtor as Slave in ur XP computer and XP can format full 80GB for u. Dont try to boot up ur computer with XP cd and format ur 80Gb.

With kind regards.

Used the MaxBlast software which worked a treat but really shouldn't have had to download the software as i bought a 120gig maxtor and that was picked up straight away by xp as a 120. nm. Thanks for all the info guys.

Until next time . . .
