Freeware Utilities for Windows Administrators.
Windows Messenger and MSN Explorer are part of the default installation of Windows XP SP2. Live Messenger is not part of the Windows XP installation, it's added afterwards.
Windows Messenger, by default, is hidden from 'Add and Remove Programs'. To remove Windows Messenger, MSN Explorer and Live Messenger, do the following:
1) Log into XP using an account with administrative privileges.
2) Open 'C:\Windows\inf\sysoc.inf' in Notepad.
3) In the [Components] section, change:
Code:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,HIDE,7
to
Code:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7
i.e. remove the word HIDE but not the commas either side of it.
4) Navigate to 'Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs' and un-install 'Windows Live Messenger' as normal.
5) Still in 'Add or Remove Programs', select the 'Add/Remove Windows Components' button on the left of the list of installed programs.
6) Scroll down the list of Windows Components and remove the tick from the 'MSN Explorer' checkbox.
7) Scroll down further and remove the ticks from BOTH the 'Windows Messenger' checkboxes. (Watch out for the small 'display update' bug which prevents you from seeing the tick removed from the lower of the 2 checkboxes until you click on the upper 'Windows Messenger' entry again.)
8) Click on the 'Next' and 'Finish' buttons then close 'Add and Remove Programs'.
