I have number of computers in the main office with LAN network. All of the computers have Internet connection using Proxy server.

So if I open IE, go to tools, internet options, Connections, LAN settings, "Proxy Server -- User proxy Server for your LAN" has the check maker.

Now, I have a special program need to be installed on one of the computers, which requires to having "Proxy Server" unchecked. How can I do this? I don't want to change group policy because I ONLY need one computer "Proxy Server" unchecked at this time. Any idea???

It's not quite as simple as you'd like, unfortunately. Internet proxy is a user setting. You want to apply (well, deny in this case) this setting to a computer.

The correct way to do this is via a special group policy setting, called "User Group Policy groupback processing mode".

Here is part of Microsoft's explanation of this setting:
Applies alternate user settings when a user logs on to a computer affected by this setting.

What this means is you want a USER policy to apply to any user who logs into a certain COMPUTER. (or an OU full of computers).

So, this is what you need to do:

1. Create a new OU underneath where your computer account resides, and move the account in question into it.
2. Create and link a new GPO to this OU.
3. Turn on loopback processing here:
[tab]Computer Config->Admin Templates->System->Group Policy->User Group Policy loopback processing mode (use merge mode if you want other user settings (non-proxy) to still be active when a user logs into this pc.
4. Set the proxy setting to disabled.

This should take care of it.

Thanks,
Andrew

loopback processing mode, not groupback :)

Thanks,
Andrew

Thanks Andrew. I truly appreciate your help.

As you suggested, I have done first 3 steps, but couldn't find a place where I can disable the proxy setting. Is it in the same place as #3?

I made a big assumption here that you were rolling out the proxy setting to your organization via another GPO. Is this not the case?

In any case, the proxy configuration section of the GPO is located here, and it should be set in the same gpo that has Loopback processing mode turned on, as it is a user setting you wish to apply to a computer:

User Config->Windows Settings->Internet Explorer Maintenance->Connection

There you will find two sections, one for Automatic Browser Configuration and one for Proxy Settings

Thanks,
Andrew

Is logging onto the PC as a local admin user (where policies are not effected) not an option?

I found it. Thanks again, Andrew.

TheLad, loggin to local admin can not change the proxy setting as the area is greyed out.

TheLad,

The users all have network drives, but they could always map their drives manually.

The users are admins on their machines, so they would have rights to change the SS Timeout as they please.

Might be an option simpler than the rest.

Thanks,
Andrew

Whoops...I just responded to the wrong thread! [blush]

Wow, never mind. I was just beyond confused. TheLad responded to this question, and it actually was a reasonable answer to a question I posed in another thread. I had multiple Firefox tabs open, and I assumed I was looking at my own thread.

TheLad - You provided a possible solution to a problem without even knowing it. Man, you're good ;)

Thanks,
Andrew
