How to turn off NDR's 2

My queue is being clogged by DNR's from postmaster@gfi-relay.domainA.com

Delivery to the following recipients failed.
username@domainB.com

These are random names that are rejected at the firewall on the domain that mail is being relayed to. Is there a way to stop these NDR's from being sent out. I know I run the risk of stopping legitimate NDR's, but I guess that's the price that is paid for spam.

Open Exchange Administrator expand Configuration and click on Connections then double click Internet Mail Service. On the Internet Mail tab click Notifications. Mark the second statement and uncheck all items.

If anyone calls and says "I know a little something about computers" just tell them to reformat it.

This method turns off only "notification" to the admin's mailbox and not really turn off NDR. You will still spit out NDR and worst from Reverse NDR spammers.

Then you should open the call with PSS again (the one that you used to obtain the patch). Perhaps you've misconfigured it?

Already talked to the PSS, he mentioned its only a "test patch" which may work in some cases. Whatever that means, they stress not to put the patch in your production environment.

The patch is hard not to misconfigure, you install it, you add your parameters and restart.

I installed the patch and change the registry key

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIMC\Parameters

On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
Type SuppressNDROptions, and then press ENTER.
On the Edit menu, click Modify, and then use one of the following methods, depending on your situation:
To enable this feature so that the Internet Mail Service does not deliver NDRs, type 1 in the Value data box.

To enable the feature so that the Internet Mail Service does not generate NDRs, type 10 in the Value data box.

To enable the feature so that the Internet Mail Service does not deliver any reports if an SMTP address is missing in the return address of the message, type 100 in the Value data box. This means that reports including delivery reports, read receipts, or NDRs are not delivered to the sender.

Note If the SuppressNDROptions registry entry is either not present or if the registry entry is set to 0 (zero), the feature is not used.
Quit Registry Editor.


It works like a charm. I get NDR's for internal users who sends to bogus domains, and 0 NDR's to external users. Before I patched it, I would get about 50+ ndr sitting in the queue. Who knows how many actually went out without going to the queue.

I contacted MS support direct, reached a REP immediately, and was provided this PATCH via email withing 5 minutes. No charge. WIll post with results.

Thanks Snowzone. You were right, getting the patch from Microsoft was effortless. I used the following 800-936-4900 and selected the last option ("hotfixes") and only had to give my name, zipcode and phone number (and email to get the url for the download and password). There was no charge (but that was my first call for support. The support website says you get two free and then it's $245 per request). Haven't installed the patch yet.

I have contacted Microsoft for the hotfix but unfortunately it's not supported any longer and they cannot provide it.
Any chance one of you chaps could email me the patch ?

Damn... thats not good.
Anybody got any clues how I could get the patch. It's our coporate system. If anyone can suggest a 3rd party provider that the patch could be purchased from I would be very grateful. If not thanks any for your help.
Can anyone can think of a way of configuring Exchange 5.5 SP 4 to do this (however manual).

I've had another thought (and it is only a thought)... any chance that you could copy the actual files (as listed below) these are the files the hotfix updates.
