Hi All,

I have two Domain controllers running 2003 server on my network. DC2 is currently running Schema Master, while DC1 is running Domain Master.

I went to console root of DC2 schema master console throu' MMC to tranfer the schema master on DC2 to DC1, I only saw change DC2 to DC2, instead of DC2 to DC1.

Plase can somebody tell me why DC1 is not showing on the change schema master dialogue box and how to get this problem resolved.

I will appreciate your contribution.

Thanks you.

You need to connect to AD on the server you wish to transfer to, so connect to Domain Controller, rather than Domain.

I suggest you log onto the DC1 directly or if you are going to connect via your mmc console make sure you are connected to DC1 and that you have rights to change the operartions mater role for this server

Nobody has mentioned it so I will, Microsoft recommends you not move this role unless you plan on removing the DC it is currently held on. If you are just taking the server down for maintenance for a while leave it alone.

Refer to for exact steps in transfering the role.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Thanks All,

Some weeks back, DC1 crashed beyond restore. I had to seize its role to DC2.

Just last week I reinstall DC1 and I wanted to relocate the schema master back to DC1.

On getting to DC2 ADS schema console root to change the Schema master role back to DC1. The change Dialogue box only gave opton to change from DC2 to DC2 and not DC2 to DC1.

How can make this change happen or should I seize it from DC2?

Your contribution will be appreciated.

Thanks

Omotomilola.

I would leave it where it is.

When you siezed the role the first time, did you totally remove the DC1 server from the AD metabase? You may need to remove it fromt he domain again and re-add it back in AFTER doing a proper cleanup to ensure the computer's SID is listed correctly in AD.

My FAQ should be of some help to you. I wrote this FAQ for Win2K but it all applies to 2003 too. faq96-4733

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark
