How to test cable performance & LAN speed...

I just replaced my netware server with a new IBM SBS2003 server and a 1Gbit switch but i havent noticed any increase in the network performance.

Cabling is old and i suspect that this might be the reason of the slow performance.

Is there any software that could help me test the performance and the ping time from each client?

Here's My .02 Cents, a couple of thing come to mind, cabling and the assorted patch cords,Jacks Etc, what is the Cat on them, if you station cabling is cat#3 but the patch Cords or 5 then it is effectively a Cat #3 connection, you didn't mention what the NIC's where in the Client PC's or how they where Configured, (full or half duplex) and finally, how many work stations and/or servers and if you are running Tcpip as the primary protocal, on everything? chances are if you are not running alot of workstations/BDC/PBC's you will not see alot of differance
I believe Software Wise Ziff/Davis had some Benchmarking software but I don't know if they have it Currently

What about the hardware: Gig-E will is not going to give you
the PERCEIVED speedup. YOU need the cpu and motherboard busses optimised for the throughput. A lot of people are wasting money believeing there is going to be a immediate
increase in speed/throughput.
