Hey.

I work in a small business enviroment (under 40 machines) and my boss is the general manager of the company. He only has to report to the head office who are based in Switzerland.

My problem is that even though he has agreed to a Conditions of Usage (AUP), the firewall is showing that he has attempted to look at banned images such as sex.jpg which he has repeately tried to look at.

Other are joke images and pages, or URL's with xxx in. Nobody else in the company has this sort of stuff reported about them, and I can't see how its related to work (we sell bulk timber to merchants.)

Normally I would suspend the account and report the issue to the boss, but as it is my boss, I can hardly send the issue to head office!!!

Any ideas on what to do?

Thanks,

Steve.

Somehow I don't see US companies offering that as an employee benefit!

I got told off because I said
Make up a person you knew who got fired because of it.
Now I agree that deception is morally problematic. But always wrong? That's not so clear.

In this case, a senior manager was breaking the rules, doing something that someone more junior would get fired for. And Stevehewitt was asking for help, because they felt it was their duty and also something they might get blaimed for not doing, but could not follow the obvious approach of going to someone more senior. I saw my idea as the best way to get some sort of honesty established.

You could leverage that situation (basically CE of Bank of Ireland giot caught with porn on pc and is no longer in his job)

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

1. We had an instance where spyware was hitting a porn site from a user's computer (whether they were at work or not) exactly every 4 minutes, around the clock. Search and Destroy removed it.

2. You might route a memo to everyone (that is REALLY directed at him), reminding "them" of the computer policy and saying that "attempted accesses to porn sites will be logged."

3. Pick your battles. Is this a big enough issue in the scheme of things to battle your BOSS over?

In a similar vein to this thread, at a former employer I discovered the software development director was running p2p file sharing software on his PC, causing the (isdn dial up) internet connection to remain up for hours on end. This cost the company money in ISDN calls by unnecessarily keeping the line open for over 4 hours. I took him to one side when he went for a coffee and politely pointed it out. He was actually quite shocked I was able to track it down to this one app on his PC by looking at the proxy server connection logs.
I ended up showing him afterwards how to view the current open connections at the proxy server and from that, it was quite easy to work out what on his PC was causing the outbound connection (open plan office, no passworded screensavers).

i admit i didnt read the entire thread, and i realise its been a while but...

if this wasnt your boss what would you do?

you would string them up and make an example.

ok. its a small company and your boss is almost head chief, but why does that change the situation.

this is the kind of attitude that drops aeroplanes out of the sky.
