how to tell when xp was loaded

Have a look at the date/time of BOOTSEC.DOS in the root of C: (You'll need to be able to 'View hidden files and folders') as this looks like is one of the first files to be written to disk at the beginning of a new install.

Alternatively, have a look at the earliest date/time of the 'Spool' sub-folder in the System32 folder.

Type "systeminfo" at a command prompt to obtain the original install date.
