I have Novell Client 3.20 and 3.21 on all of our Windows 9x PC's. We currently have a single Netware 4.11 server running the shop's file and print services. The clients have IP as their preferred protocol preferences as of now (but they also have IPX available - in which they are currently using to communicate with the server on 4.11).

When I migrate to 5.1 (which I intend to do in the next two weeks) I would like to go to a pure IP environment and scrap IPX altogether. When I do this, what if any changes will I need to make to the clients to allow them to continue to use the server as they have in the past (file and print services)?

You should not have to make any changes. I recommend removing the existing client first. Then I would do a custom install with the new client and specify IP only. Make sure you have unique IP addresses, all sub net masks are correct as well as the gateway. Use the same workstation ID as you did before. When you log back into the LAN file and print services should remain unchanged.

If you do the install with the automatic client update switch /ACU then the new client is set up but any existing IPX will not be removed. That is why I suggest removing the existing client and then a fresh new client install.

Another option (Which provides an "undo" path) is to install Netware 5 in the campatabilty mode (run both IPX and IP). Then as you move the clients to IP, the IPX protocol just goes away. This way if you have a problem with a workstation not configured correctly for IP, it could still make a connection with IPX. As you remove IPX from your clients, the network traffic (SAPs etc.) just go away. Once all the workstations are converted, just unbind IPX from the server.
Dan

Thanks. I will go with compatibility mode until I can convert all of the clients.

Thats a key issue here is making sure that all of your devices, and applications are IP aware. If they are not, you can give yourself a good headache. The compatibility mode option will work great, and as y ou eliminate IPX devices, it will give you the opportunity to resolve any issues that may arise as you convert. Good luck on your migration, it should be fun.

Also, you may consider investing the Novells Netware 4.11 to 5.whatever book from shopnovell.com as it discusses many features in NW 5 ie NDPS Printing, SLP (Service Location Protocol and how it works with Migration), the new commands like NWCONFIG which has replaced INSTALL and the reset server command that allows you to reboot a server without typing down, exit, server etc. I also recommend that you download the supplemental documentation from support.novell.com as it contains information on NTP time synch, SLP, The new Time Synchronization which is called transitive synchronization <---- this is different from the 4.11 Transitive vectoring, and it is important to know in case you add more servers later in life. Thats about all I can think of for now, I don't want to dissiminate the entire 700 page book, but these are some key things you should look at and become familiar with.

Mark C. I will be achieving my CNE 5 in the near future, hopefully before Novell's CCR deadline. I also have my Bachelors
