How to swap two phone extensions in Nortel 2

I have a Nortel norstar phone system. I have read many things online that should work. My problem still persists.

Without too much information, I have two employee's that swapped rooms, per high up management. I need to swap the two extensions 106<- ->109. I went into the system programming on the phone, and there is only an option to change fax DN. I am unsure if this is the DN I am supposed to change, I would think not since I am changing complete voice extension. I would change the lines on the phone punch box, but I am a new Administrator, and there is no extra wire's to adjust, and the whole thing is a complete nightmare. Its a horrid spaghetti server closet. Below is a link to the youtube video of me programming the phone and the options I get. Please any and all help is welcomed. I am a mere 1st year Network Administrator, and Nortel predates me :/.


 
This kind of issue is not what the forum is about. I do understand the place you are in. But also understand that your company needs to have someone come out and train you on the basics. A lot of companies will go ahead and pay for that and they see it as an investment. You can make a case that in order for you to maintain the system correctly you need some onsite training. Believe me it is worth it. I have trained customers like this myself many times.

Do you have any of the KSU support documents ? If so, look up set relocation. Depending on your KSU and software revision, it may be as simple as enable set relocation in programming, unplug both sets, wait five or so minutes, and then physically move the phones between the two offices, then plug one phone in, let synchronize for five minutes, then plug in the second phone. If your KSU supports set relocation, your phones will have all the same programming and the KSU software will remap the port designations without any physical wiring changes at the punchblock(s).
 
The Youtube.com video was merely to show the options that was shown in the system, not what I know... Most everything I read online, and researched was to do one of the following. One switch the wires at the punch block, granted its not my strong suite, I choose not to go this route. Two, go to programming options by entering feature **266334 then go to system programming, then to change DN. I firmly believe I have a different version then what most people are referring to. It may be my innate ability to carefully research, carefully apply, and get results instead of consulting a firm to come do it. Simply put, this is what this job requires, what ever it takes with as little money. (Literally, it was in the job description) But hey, I'm a Unix/Linux admin. Typically always the free route.
 
Just remember that free advice has a limit. We have been trained just as you on our job skills. Some things needs to be left to those who are trained.

I agree for the most part with you. It would be much easier for me to get trained on this legacy system, but to be honest as of right now this is not an option. I work for a small business that has an even smaller budget. I do want to thank you for your input as it is very valid.
 
It doesn't cost that much for a few hours of training. In fact, it would be cheaper in the long run.

Ok this has been going on for two days. Friedtaters, how many hours have you spent researching and trying things at $15.00, $20.00 or even $30.00 per hour of salary plus benefits etc to your employer? I gaurantee, you have now cost your employer more than what they would have spent on training. If you worked for me, you'd be fired.

The issue comes down to this. I take calls from customers that have questions. Sometimes they need help and it doesn't take much time to help them. However, if they called me and wanted to do what you are doing I would tell them that I have to come out. The reason is that if I try to tell them what they need to do they will need to keep calling for clarification and more help. We are here to help but our help must be limited. Yes the economy is not the best and for that reason I am not here to take work from an honest tech who may get laid off for lack of work.

Just go to the backboard, locate the cross-connect blocks for ports and station cable, identify the jumpers, then swap them, move the phones, if needed... done!

What about setting up extension relocation within Norstar programming?. Although it would still mean swapping over the ports at the frame.

Feature *0 is useful on the digital phone for key enquiry. Press the intercom key to view the extension number and then press # to view the port number, so that you can find it on the wiring panel.

From my point of view, set relocation is not worth the trouble. I just move the pair of wires, and the phone if they are different or the users are particular about "their" sets. For me that way the port assignments don't change, and things are kept in order! I know in the early days, set relocation had bugs, and I was told not to use it, and I don't. In later versions it may work properly, but it does have some gotchas! Others have their experiences with this feature, but the above are mine.

taters, I'd advise you try get the Norstar documentation before you do anything, it's deep and so is the system.. you certainly want to backup the existing switch config before you play around.
Do a search on enable set relocation.
if you turn it on turn it off immed. after your done.

We set relocation all the time. The key is to have the customer plug one phone in at a time and wait for it to come up. But, I have seen set relocation cause all kinds of problems. Certainly moving the cross connect is the best way.
