I created account for my son 7-yesr old, he leraning very fast computer. But now the problem is what ever he like (eg. cartoon characters) he just press print tab. I have laser printer so is any way to stop him printing or when ever he login printer become disable.

remove the default printer from his profile, although allowing things to print later from his profile will require you to recreate his printer connection....

Thanks for reply, removing printer is my last option, while i am using xp pro. I checked site you gave me and those settings are for Win-2K. Looking some thing same for XP-Pro.

NoCalAdmin thanks for help.

Wel here is situation... i have 3 computers and they work independtly but working on wireless router for internet. Printer is also on wireles print server. Its not network so no domain.
The above site has all info for setup of printer policy but nothing to stop printing or disable printer from standalone computer for specific user..

I believe you can follow those steps and use it to create a Local Policy setting, stopping a specific user from access. I am sure a Deny policy setting can be written.

I'll write a Local Policy and test it out and post it. I do not have a machine to test it on where I am at, so.... check this thread tomorrow afternoon.

unless a guru comes up with something in the meantime.. I'll keep checking your post...

sorry, we're close though...

Tom

Thanks Tom, i will wait your reply and check it tommorow.

I read on through the XP instructions and we can right a registry string to prevent the profile from printing. I think in your enviroment this is what we should do. I'll send you this registry entry to perform. If it doesnt work we can remove it. There will be no ill effects other than the lack of printing, which like I said you can quickly delete the new key.

Standing by for your service pack info

Tom

For my young kids I added a printer (it can be anything like HP Laserjet III), and set the port as NUL. Then made it the default printer. When they click print, nothing happens.

You can also set, thru the printer properties, as to when the printer is available. Look at the advance properties tab. You can also the priority of the printer (try something like 99). This should drastically cut down on the amount of printing your son can do.

My kids ask permission before they can print.

Otherwise, they lose their computer privelidges for the week.

they all have good point. Although we can stop the ability of printing ( i think) educating proper use of equipment ulitmately is the best.

still waiting for your service pack....

Tom

Tom. Its SP2 and all updates installed till now.

PRPhx. i gave printing priority to 99 but it still print very quickly.

Frank4d. i am going to try your point but i think then this will effect all users. But let me try and i post it back.

gbaughma. your suggesion is very good and i ofcourse i will do this.

Lets try this option too how to disable printer for a one or group of users on one standalone computer. it will increase my knowledge too.

frand's solution will NOT effect any other profile...and is the easiest. The Registry tweak or policy setting may be able to be set for a user Group, so make sure you have your user, power users, and admins defined...

I'll start writting

Tom

i tried as Frank4d said and then i checked that port changed in all users so this will not work for me.

further research brings me back to square one.

Here is what to do.....

go to the Properties of the Printer, go to the security tab- add [username] in the Deny Access

This will prevent the said user the ability to use that printer. SO, if you have a second printer they are allowed to use they can still print.

Not bllocking them with a policy allows othe printing options. ANd you can set these on all your printers.

Good luck

Tom

Well, there is no security tab or option in printer properties. What i have only tabs are

General Sharing Advanced Color Management and Tray Setting

I checked in all tabs and there is no option as you told me.
