In MS Word 2003, I'm writing a document that involves linking to two Excel spreadsheets.

\\bp1ldcvi012\darren$\WORK\Migration\Apps.xls

\\bp1ldcvi012\MISC2\Apps Support Team\Middle Office\_General\Supported Apps.xls

These links work as I create them (I can ctrl-click them and the spreadsheets open)

BUT - when I save the document, the second link's underlying hyperlink changes to relative:

../../MISC2/Apps%20Support%20Team/Middle%20Office/_General/Supported%20Apps.xls

and it's that "../../" that breaks things - when I ctrl-click the link that Word's changed it to on saving, I get "The address of this site is not valid."

How can I stop Word from persisting in changing my absolute hyperlinks into relative hyperlinks?

I've had no replies to this,

Did I post it in the wrong forum, or was it a silly question?

With default settings, Word transforms absolute hyperlinks to relative hyperlinks when a document is saved.
To change your settings in Word (seems to be a one-time change), follow these steps:
1) Choose Options from the Tools menu. Word displays the Options dialog box.
2) Make sure the General tab is selected.
3) Click on the Web Options button. Word displays the Web Options dialog box.
4) Make sure the Files tab is selected.
5) Clear the Update Links on Save check box.
6) Click on OK to close the Web Options dialog box.
7) Click on OK to close the Options dialog box.

I'd done a bit more research since, too, and found the same answer you gave - I'm including it here so people are linked to a possible other source of answers:

The answer is here:

and browse to the (currently third) article which is titles "Word 2003 SP2 still has problem with hyperl..."

There seems to be two ways to get to the checkbox you need to uncheck, in our version it's:

Tools --> Options --> General --> [Web Options...] --> Files --> make sure "Update links on save" is unchecked

Once again, thanks ad39311 - I've given you a star :)
