How to stop having to enter password twice? 1

I have Widows 7 Home Premium - upgraded from Vista Home Premium. I have three user accounts set up. When I try to log into my account after waking up the pc by touching the keyboard, I have to enter my password twice: The first time, it shows the spinning dial and then screen ges black, as if it's going to log me in, but then it puts up the login screen again. The second time I enter my password, I am logged into my account.

What I know:

1. I did not have this problem with Vista.

2. After sleeping for at least 4 hours, the PC always requires two attempts to log in. As long as the pc has not been asleep for four hours prior to login, I only have to enter the password once.

3. The problem affects all user ccounts: including those with no password (you have to click account icon twice)

4. Clean Boot test did not fix the problem.

Does it happen in safe mode?

Have you run any Malware checks? Malwarebytes.org has a good Malware Scanner.

Have you tried Using system Restore to restore back to a point before this occurred?

Have you tried the Power Options: Require Password when Waking from Sleep? It may be requiring it on top of the usual log in. Uncheck that option.

Control Panel: Power Options / [System and Security->Power Options] depending on your CP layout. On the left Pane, "Require a Password on Wake Up"

Have you considered that it may be a problem with the actual Hiberfil.sys file itself?

Windows 7 – Delete Hibernation File (hiberfil.sys)

After you have deleted the file via the Powercfg command, reboot, and turn Hibernation back on to recreate the file. Use the appropriate command to suit the situation.


powercfg –h off
powercfg –h on

I don't use Hibernation but I believe there is also a checkbox in Disk Cleanup to remove the Hibernation File.


Other things that you could try include running ChkDsk.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Try it first by not checking either box (this will run it in a Read-only mode) to see if it flags any hard drive or file problems. If it does, restart it by ticking both boxes, and rerun it to allow it to attempt to fix any found problems.

Thank you both for the suggestions. I will try them out one by one.

It will take some time to check these out, because I need the pc to sleep for at least 4 hours each time I change something. Then, if soething appears to have worked, I'll need to repeat it to verify. So this can take many hours. And my family members are not helping - the only time they leave the pc idle long enough for me to check it is over night.

It may be slow going, but I will keep you posted.

Took me a second!

Not a really useful comment, but for future reference this is called the wait cursor.


I saw this once but it seemed to be caused by having the screen saver (walk and lock) delay set longer than the auto-hibernate delay. I can't imagine anyone does this very often though. I haven't tried to reproduce it.

No, just the opposite: "2. ...As long as the PC has not been asleep for four hours prior to login, I only have to enter the password once." (I guess a more accurate statement would be, "If awakened after less than 4 hours of sleep, the PC operate as it should - only one password entry required.")

I tried this and it appears to be a fix but Windows had also restarted the PC after an automatic update, so I need to try it again to be sure. I'm going to put the PC off limits to the family this weekend so I can start troubleshooting more.

No, this setting turns off walk and lock. I don't think this is your answer.
