i have a computer shared in an Ethernet network, and i use the printer connected to it and shared to be used by the rest of computers... these computers are connected to the internet by DSL Modem...i want to disable any internet activity on that computer( like internet browsing, chatting, downloading,etc...) while keeping the printer connected shared on the network and can be used by other computers... i looked for hardware solution (print server) and it is pretty expensive, it costs me about $133, prices here are extermly unreasonable, can any one advice me what to do ?... is there any software solution or any options that i dont know in Windows...by the way am using Windows Home edition..and it is hardly be changed to professional, can any help plz, thank u for ur time

Depending on the network settings, you could change the gateway settings to point away from the DSL modem. That would effectively disable the internet on that particular PC without interfering with the network.

Start -> Control Panel. Network Connections -> Right Click the Local Area Conection -> Properties -> Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click on Properties, change the gateway value to something else. like 192.168.0.1 to 0.0.0.0.

If The Properties are set to DHCP, you can probably block the PC from accessing the internet from the DSL modem. But we would need the specific model of your modem to be more specific.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

If i blocked the internet connection from the DSL modem will the printer visible to other PCs on the network...

i guess the solution to type a false proxy is not highly secured because if anyone used the computer may delete these settings. Also it doesnt block downloading and chatting. what i need is kind of secure that no one can use internet on that computer, thanks

It blocks downloading and chatting.
By using the registry edit (described in the article) a change to the false proxy setting is barred.

Also consider zone alarms fire wall the free one can also disable all internet access.

Never give up never give in.

There are no short cuts to anything worth doing :)
