Hi All ,

This is my first post.

I like to start using share point for set up my company web site , not sure that share point it is the right software for use for set up company web site ? Hope some one can advise me. ( I have search info from goggle , but able to confirm ).

Paul Yeo

Hi Paul,
do you want to setup an Intranet site for sharing documents files etc or do you need a public internet site.?
For the Intranet site for internal use within the company i'd (and am using) sharepoint easy to setup and edit, (once you play with it a bit to get used to it)and permissions can be set so that anybody you wish can edit, add and delete items on the site, or they can be restricted to read only.

Hi Max , Thank you for your reply .Nice to hear that you have experience with share point. i need to use share point to set up for intranet and internet web site. by using the free version. are you using the share point free version ? or paid version ? as i try to start with the free version now and move to paid version. hope you can advise me what are limitation of the free version ?

Paul Yeo

Hey Paul,
Yes i've setup sharepoint 3.0 wss at a couple of sites now mainly for Intranet sites but it can be used as an internet site as well. The links below might be of use to give you some further info.
Have you used it at all before? best way to learn about it, i've found was to set it up then play with it to see what it does. Find a spare machine or setup a virtual machine, i have it setup that way at one site, setup sharepoint and play before you run it live.

This site explains the differences between 3.0 and 2007

Hope that helps some Feel free to ask anything else hopefully i can answer your questions.

i also have another school site i work at who use sharepoint 3.0 for there internal site then use another app for there internet site with a link to the internal site. Click on the link it asks for a user name and password then takes them to the internal(sharepoint) site. Another option!

Paul Yeo

Hey paul,

This is the system requirements for installation
download it here

Sorry i don't have any sample sites you can access and i may have led you astray, users can be allowed to add, modify and delete content on sites ie. add docs add announcements use the calendar.
But here is a demo video from microsoft

Hi Paul,
I don't want to give out my email address here as this is a public forum and i get enough spam and rubbish.
But this is the best place to ask questions a lot of very knowledgeable people here just need to ask the right question :).
So ask away no such thing as a dumb question, we all should be learning something new everyday.

Hi Max , i have manage to install the share point on windows server 2003 . it is because i install only trail version ? that is why i notice that a lot of feature is not available on my WSS .

i read it said that i need to install MOSS in order to have those feature. ( As i notice that when i try to set up customer list , after i set up the data is not save ).

does it mean that i need to buy share point in order to have MOSS feature ?

Paul Yeo

Hi Max ,

can you please provide me link to check the unit price of the software for all the share point software like std , enterprise , etc.

Thank you in advance.

Paul

Hey Paul,

This post gives a decent explanation of the pricing scheme and how much product you need for your application.

When all else fails, you can dig through Microsoft's price list and read up on their product literature there.

Just remember, if you're .NET savvy, there's a LOT you can do with the free version, and there are a ton of useful and reasonably-priced add-ons out in the wild.

Good luck!

Paul Yeo

There is a product called Sharepoint Designer. This was one of the products MS made to replace Frontpage, but made for sharepoint pages
here's a link to ms site.
there is an online trial you can log into to see and use, and a 60 day trial you can download to test.

Hi Max ,

Thank you vey much for share with me the share point designer . i will down load the demo and try it out.

By the way may i know that the share point trail copy ( free version ) , can trail for how long ? as i know that MOSS need to purchase with CAL . which is very expensive.

in case you answer is can trail forever , then i need to ask you , many people will not buy MOSS from microsoft , since the trail ver can do quite a lot of thing.

sharepoint 2007 moss is the buy version, i beleive the trial is a 60 day trial.
It depends what you need to do, see the earlier post regarding the difference between the two versions.

Hi Jeff ,

Thank you for your reply. I also like to know MOSS 2007. But actually my question is asking for WSS , which is the basic version , how many day for the trail period for WSS.

wait for your reply.

PAul Yeo

There is no trial period for WSS. It is free, forever.
