Hi, I've been running Internet Explorer on my Windows XP for months. It's not working any more. I narrowed down the problem to when i do IPCONFIG /RENEW, i get msg error occurred while renewing interface local area connection 3 : the system can not find the file specified. My network connection configured to obtain an IP address automatically an an IP address 0.0.0.0, I was trying to start the DHCP client service (right click My computer, then Manage, Services and Apllications, Services, then DHCP client) the service status remains STARTING, but never gets started ! I don'T know how to repair the registry for this DHCP client service ? Also, when i do NETSH INT IP RESET, i get Initilization function INTHELPERDLL in IPMONTR.DLL failed to start with error code 1010. I need help !!!

I've run into this exact problem before today. Got IP 0.0.0.0, DHCP service was starting but not started, ipconfig /renew said file could not be found, got the 10107 error when running the netshell cmd to reset tcp/ip.

There's an easy way to fix without downloading a winsock fix file or reinstalling WinXP:

1) Delete the Corrupted Registry Entries

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
In Registry Editor, expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services.
Right-click Winsock, and then click Delete. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
Right-click Winsock2, and then click Delete. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
REBOOT THE COMPUTER.

2) Install TCP/IP on top of itself
Open the properties window of the network connection (Local Area Connection)
Click Install
Click Protocol, then Add
Click Have Disk
Type the path to the %systemroot%\inf folder (usually C:\Windows\inf, but sometimes C:\winnt\inf) and click OK
(if you try to click Browse, then browse to the \inf folder, it may not show up in the list)
Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click OK.
Restart the computer.

I hope this helps someone. This fix also works for the "Operation was attempted on something that is not a socket" error.

Ok - I tried everything listed here, including the excellent winsockfix.exe utility... and no luck with my WinXP home. I still had 0.0.0.0 - yet the net cards both showed up fine in network control panel, noticed when I unplugged them, etc.

As a last ditch effort, I went into
TCP/IP->advanced->options->TCP/IP filtering and enabled it, but allowed everything through.

I rebooted the computer, voila it worked.

The theory behind it was "turn all the knobs until it does something".

Anyway, just one more thing to try- miraculously, it fixed my situation, after the WinsockFix.exe fixed whatever else was wrong.

bcastner,

Just wanted to thank you you for your post of the winsockfix. Was helping a customer out on the phone and it was driving us insane. Did a normal winsock delete and tcp/ip reinstall. We weren't getitng the Norton stuff, but stuff similar with the APIPA and being able to ping by IP but IE would not open anything if a static IP was used.

Thank you a lot for it!

underclip,

Thank you. I keep this FAQ on the Tek-Tips site updated constantly so that the Winsock "fix" and Microsoft Knowledge Base Articles are up to date: faq779-4625

The WinsockFix worked great today to solve my problem.
The problem happened only after a power down/up. I have Adaware 6, Build 6.81. Don't recall this running, but this thread points to that probably being the culprit.

Excellent tool!! [2thumbsup]

I had a very similar problem in that the DHCP service would not start, nor would the netlogon service. Adaware was not installed on the system, and neither was Norton Antivirus. The user simply stated that the battery on a laptop had died and the system went down. When the system was restarted that's when the fun began.
I'm having a similar problem with a client. Ip address 0.0.0.0, gateway and all the same. DHCP service will not start, it was hung up as starting. All options, start, stop etc. greyed out. DHCP service was set to log onto local account, not NT AUTHORITY/Network Service. I changed it, re-booted it, trys to start but times out. Think the winsockfix will help? I'm at wits end. (User works with high school students who have been kicked out. She brought home a floppy and ran it without any anti-virus running. That's when the trouble started.)

GlenJohnson,

. run WinsockFix. Test.
. if no joy, ignore the registry edits, but follow this section of MS KB:
Note Restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys. Doing so causes the Windows XP operating system to create new shell entries for those two keys. (Glen note: WinsockFix did this already for you). If you do not restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys, the next step does not work correctly.

Step 2: Install TCP/IP
Right-click the network connection, and then click Properties.
Click Install.
Click Protocol, and then click Add.
Click Have Disk.
Type C:\Windows\inf, and then click OK.
On the list of available protocols, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.
Restart the computer.

Hi,

A few months ago I had the "can't renew ip error" on my laptop..The WinSockFix did the trick.

But now I'm having the same problem on my desktop pc (XP HOME)...I tried The Winsock Fix but it didn't had any effect. The sympthons are the same as stated in this topic..
. 0.0.0.0 as the IP address, DNS address, Gateway address
. ipconfig /renew error messages

My netwerk worked perfectly for more than a year : the cable internet comes in via a SILICOM USB ETHERNET,a CROSSED UTP CABLE runs from the desktop to the laptop, with "share internet" on ( my 15 dollar netwerk :).

I tried all solutions in this topic
-winsockfix
-I didn't recently remove Norton
-scanned with Spy Sweeper found 29 ,deleted them
-reinstalled TCP/IP
-various other solutions stated here (exemple "put filter on but let everything go through")

If anyone knows another thing I could try?

Check through the services by running msconfig, start with the basics like tcp/ip and most importantly DHCP client, cos it's this that deals with your PCs requests for an ip address to be assigned by your router or isp, if you find something not running, start it, if it won't start, go through it's dependant services and then THEIR dependant services etc until you find the culprit. It's quite likely that something naughty has stopped something, you interrupted it's activity by killing it with adaware and therefore it will stay running ok when you start it.

JM007,

ethernet driver, ethernet driver, ethernet driver.

Use a working machine to see if a driver update is available.

If that gives no joy, replace the ethernet NIC. They can act as "lightbulbs".

bcaster,

Even when I don't use the USB adapter and put the internet cable in the pc directly I get the same error...besides why would the adapter "suddenly" need a new driver...last week it still worked ???

JM007,

Lets go to level two on the repair. (Level three is reinstall Windows, which is not as onerous as it appears).

If no joy, and you are certain your adapter driver is up to date,

bcastner,

As I already stated : I tried to reinstall TCP/IP , just the same way as you wrote,I have studied this topic for like two hours.
I guess I could try to install the latest driver updates as a last shot.I downloaded these to my laptop ,extracted them, three files : U2EDRV.SYS ,a text file, and a help file...should I just put them in the windows system directory ,nothing more?

About reinstalling windows : as I understand from the page you have posted I will not have to backup all my files?

Thanks for the support so far,

Greetz

You will not lose data or applications, but you will lose service pack and hotfix information. Plan, with firewall enabled, to spend some time at the Windows Update site.

Bcastner, the winsockfix did not work. But your'e suggestions after that about following the MS article did the trick. Funny, even before I re-booted the computer, I recieved a message down in the corner about Norton has just done a live-update. Client is happy and so am I. Thanks.

Glenn,

Glad you got the issue sorted. The WinsockFix may not completely repair the issue as you found, but what it does do is rebuild 13 registry values under the Winsock2 key. With these virginal registry tables, then rebuilding the TCP/IP service entries should make even a stubbborn case of corruption go away.

Best,
Bill Castner

Started a personal notebook on computer fixes. I've started learning so much at TT, I need a way to keep track of it. This is going in the TCP/IP Chapter.
