Hi, I've been running Internet Explorer on my Windows XP for months. It's not working any more. I narrowed down the problem to when i do IPCONFIG /RENEW, i get msg error occurred while renewing interface local area connection 3 : the system can not find the file specified. My network connection configured to obtain an IP address automatically an an IP address 0.0.0.0, I was trying to start the DHCP client service (right click My computer, then Manage, Services and Apllications, Services, then DHCP client) the service status remains STARTING, but never gets started ! I don'T know how to repair the registry for this DHCP client service ? Also, when i do NETSH INT IP RESET, i get Initilization function INTHELPERDLL in IPMONTR.DLL failed to start with error code 1010. I need help !!!

Same problem except on a Win2k machine. Problem started after latest virus update from Mcafee.

Uninstalled Adaware. Didn't fix problem.

Ran Winsock Fix and this fixed the problem.

Joined Tek-Tips.

Thanks for the help, never seen an issue like this before.

will the winsockfix work for windows 2000 also???

i have the svchost.exe error and think i determined its from a DHCP client error. in safe mode ive turned to manual all the services in the admin tools. then do a normal boot and everythings fine but no internet. i manually start the DHCP Client service and i start to get errors, mainly svchost error. then i cant cut/paste, drag/drop icons, use links in the network, system uses up 99% of CPU?? i am out of options and cant fix this error. (dont want to reformat just yet but i feel its the only way)

please help. thanks in advance!

guess i was wrong. the winsock fix didnt work and i still get a svchost.exe error. funny that i have all the services set to manual and have no problems. but then i need the internet and start the DHCP and the errors begin????

Many of those services have to be automatic or you will have serious and odd problems.

You will have to look to see how the default configurations for the service entries on Win2000 are set. Because of dependencies in the services, they can be very difficult to start by hand.

svchost should never be manual. It is the generic host process for loading .dll based service applets.

I have a link to the Black Viper site here:
thread779-628965 contains the link to download the default XP registry block for intializing services. Perhaps by scanning the XP defaults you could experiment in Win2k with the settings of automatic v. manual.

i have a printout of the default settings for the services and know which should be automatic vs manual. i just went into safe mode and set them all to manual to see if i could figure out what was causing my svchost.exe error. as the error doesnt occur in safe mode but does occur in safe mode with networking, i did some digging. (seemed to be the DHCP but as you mentioned, with them all off, probably disturbed other things also)

i am probably going about this all wrong. however i have tried almost everything and can't get rid of the svchost error even after reinstalling win2k.

With the exception of the latter W2K problems, this sounds like an xp problem. I've heard XP Home is as bad as ME. I recently bought an XP Home laptop, and even with the drivers it wouldn't install a simple SMC wireless network card. (This hasn't been digitally signed by M$) Just curious as to how many of the problems were home, pro or w2k. Glad to see some good workarounds here. Thanks for the info.

Just a newbie to this site but this is a first; only 2 results came back on google searching "netsh inithelperdll error" and this is the one that got me going. I have NO IDEA what happened, I did uninstalla bunch of crap from my wifes computer and one day no internet. Luckily I have 2 more computers right next to the one that was busted...

Use the WinsockFix.zip file, I ran that, rebooted, nothing. Then tried netsh blah blah blah and rebooted again, had network activity and viola! Only thing I notice so far is that flash plugin for IE needed a fresh install but that was no biggie. Thanks to all who threw their 2 cents in this one, very narrow search results (via google) but excellent follow ups from all. Great job everyone.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

I had the same problem as the top of this thread. The solution on page 7 - WinsockFix.zip - from bcastner May 19, 2003 worked. I wish I had seen it before spending hours removing and reinstalling devices.

Root cause of my problem: Adaware 6

Thank you bcastner!

I don't know why or how, but XP was not using the hosts file. Some sort of trojan hijacker had done something to cause it to use one it had place in the windows/help folder. It had hijacked a bunch of URLs and given them the IP of 207.44.220.30 to include google.com. After running Spybot Search&Destroy and the latest updates for AVP my problem still existed. I ran the program you linked to at:

and now everything is back to normal and I can once again use my hosts file as designed. Thank you very much!

Poss more info following from BGXP's last post.

I have also been battling with this for a week now,
I was dammed if I was going to trash it and start again, mainly because I am (supposed) to be an IT professional and wanted to know exactly what had caused it !

I can't wait to get home and try the Winsock fix - fingers crossed !!!!!!!!!

NOW - I noticed in a very brief moment just before the usual "cannot find web page" error page, a very quick glimpse of the following " Redirecting to Streaming Website " message ?
I can find no ref to this on the net at all ?
Anyone heard of this ?

BTW I am using Ad-aware build 6.181 and McAfee's latest dat files.

Thanks guys! I had the same exact problem, and WinSock Fix fixed it.

Well the winsocks repair tool worked fine for me and the latest Ad-aware engine and ref file did not cause the problem to return, so all is well.

Thanks to all for the useful information here.

After using SpyKiller to remove adware I had a problem accessing the internet. Having read this thread I should have used AD-AWARE for free. After cleaning I could not renew my DHCP connection. The error message I got when calling ipconfig /renew was "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket". After using bcastners fix the problem went away. SpyKiller's website has a similar fix on their website WinsockXPFix but I found this fix first. In addition a problem I was having with earthlink email( could not send or receive email on my XP machine" went away also. I had went through tech support at earthlink for many hours with no luck except "Don't use the XP machine". I am very greatful for this post.

A good discussion of the Winsock "fix" utility, and an always kept current link can be found here: faq779-4625

I found something better than reinstalling windows. I was very frustrated after trying all the sugggestions listed.

The key for me was to restart NetBT over TCP/IP before I could renew my IP with the DHCP server.

GO to system hardware and view hidden connections -> NetBT TCP/IP and change it to automatic and start the service. Everything works without reinstalling windows or repairing it

bahramu,

I am glad what you did work.
But there is zero use of the Netbios Helper service in DHCP leasing.

The Helper service is enabled when Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled under the TCP/IP properties sheet for the connection.

DHCP uses connectionless broadcasts, and is not in any way shape or form dependent on Netbios.

The WinsockFix worked very well today to solve my problem.
The problem was introduced after installing the software for a Wireless Network Card (Belkin) in my Windows 2000 system. After roll-back of all installation changes the problem persisted. I found WinsockFix via this thread which solved the problem. The problem was re-introduced when I applied the Belkin software again and it was solved again by re-running WinsockFix. So, thank you all !!

Few weeks ago I had the same problem on two Windows 2000 systems. That time I finally decided to re-install the operating system. I think, the WinsockFix could have saved me 2 long days of re-installation work, but I didn't find the fix those days.

There must be a vulnerability in Windows 2000 and Windows XP that Microsoft should solve to prevent these problems.

Hans

WinsockFix will work under Win9x - Windows XP. It starts by detetecting the version of Windows being run and adjusting itself accordingly.

Glad it helped you.

Hi Guys
I have had my dhcp client stopped by running Ad Aware,
I have a router which is a dhcp server, I can get internet access by manually choosing an ip address, but not full connectivity.
The dhcp client service shows as stopped, and attempting to restart it fails with error 1068 the dependancy service or group failed to start.
It has dependancies of AFD Networking Support environment,Netbios over tcp/ip and tcp/ip protocol driver, AFD isn't in the services list, netbios over tcp/ip is stopped, and attempting to restart it also fails the same, and in turn, it has afd as a dependancy. Is this AFD correct, i.e. should it be there? if so, why isn't it in the services list?

I have tried all of the fixes for winsock etc, to no avail, presumably as I can obtain some connectivity, tcp/ip is ok,

Tearing my hair out now, I've been trying to sort out the problem with my own pc for a week, on and off, and then ran ad aware on a customer's m/c, only to have the same problem, and I really don't want to have to a reinstall on that if I can help it!
