Hi, I've been running Internet Explorer on my Windows XP for months. It's not working any more. I narrowed down the problem to when i do IPCONFIG /RENEW, i get msg error occurred while renewing interface local area connection 3 : the system can not find the file specified. My network connection configured to obtain an IP address automatically an an IP address 0.0.0.0, I was trying to start the DHCP client service (right click My computer, then Manage, Services and Apllications, Services, then DHCP client) the service status remains STARTING, but never gets started ! I don'T know how to repair the registry for this DHCP client service ? Also, when i do NETSH INT IP RESET, i get Initilization function INTHELPERDLL in IPMONTR.DLL failed to start with error code 1010. I need help !!!

I am having this exact same problem on a laptop. Can anyone help? I have searched the interent and cannot find an answer...

Sounds like the DHCP Client has become corrupted or is missing. Do a repair of your XP installation.

[ul][li]Boot from the XP CD[/li]
[li]At the Setup screen - Press enter (NOT R for repair)[/li]
[li]PgDn and press F8 for the Licensing screen[/li]
[li]Select the XP installed location and press R to repair[/li]
[li]Setup will copy install files and then reboot the machine DON'T REBOOT FROM THE CD. Let it boot from the hard drive.[/li]
[li]When it is done the process, remove the CD and reboot normally.[/li][/ul]

Hope that helps.

try like this ,disable the local area connection and star it immediately

Instead of a repair, try installing another protocol such as NETBEUI and then remove TCP/IP and re-add it. After that you can remove the other protocol (NETBEUI if that is what you installed)

Sometimes, TCP/IP gets corrupted and in order to re-install, you need to have another protocol running.

OK installing another protocol is a good idea and something I have not tried. However, I thought you could not uninstall TCP/IP in Windows XP. In the network properties, the Uninstall option is not a selectable option when highlighting TCP/IP.
Can you give me any info on how to uninstall?

hayesb2,

You are correct. You can not remove TCP/IP in XP since it is considered a core component. See
You can use "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" from a command prompt to reset the protocol stack. THere may be some clues in the log to indicate what is going on.

Good luck.

Thinking too fast ... Thinking Win 2K... Missed that! That article works great. I used it once early in August before I decided to rolled back to Windows 2000 because I kept having TCP/IP problems.

I've tried repairing XP...no luck.
When i type 'netsh int ip reset reset.log' I get the following error message:

Initialization Function InitHelperDll in IPMONTR.DLL failed to start with error code 10107

Any help or suggestions??

hayesb2,

IPMONTR.DLL is the Routing & Remote Access IP Configuration helper DLL.

- Do a search of your drive to ensure that the file exists. It should be in your C:\Windows\System32 directory. If it does not, go to DLL World at and download a copy or extract from your XP CD.
- Open a command prompt and type the following
"regsvr32 ipmontr.dll" without the quotes
- From the command prompt type
"route delete *"
- From the command prompt type
"netsh interface ip delete arpcache"
- Reboot the machine

Don't know if any or all of that will work but it is worth a shot.

Good luck.

When I type "regsvr32 ipmontr.dll" i get the following error message:

'ipmontr.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. This file can not be registered.'

Any other help or assistance??

hayesb2,

Did you by chance recently uninstall Norton AntiVirus?

If you have, check the registry under the following keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\DHCP
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT

In the right pane, check the value of DependOnService. If ther is an entry for SYMTDI or NISDRV, delete them

Close the Registry Editor and reboot the machine.

Hope that helps.

Yes I did recently uninstall Norton Antivirus, and the problems seemed to start happening around that time. Hmmm...Have you heard of this being a problem before? I am not at the pc with the problem at this moment, but I will try doing what you suggested later today and post the results....Thanks alot for your help thus far!

hayesb2,

No, I had not heard of this particualr one before but I was aware of some issues with NAV removal. I found this when searching for XP AND "DHCP client".

Let us know if it works out.
Good luck.

Ok for DHCP in my registry - Depend \onService keys, when I double-click it it shows the following dependancies:

Tcpip, Afd, NetBT

For NetBT : Tcpip

I do not see the SYMTDI or NISDRV listed anywhere.

When I go to manage my computer-> services-> DHCP Client it says 'Starting' but I cannot manually stop or start the process.
My Computer Browser is enabled and says it has 'Started'
Any more help or suggestions?

Darn! I thought we had this nailed when you said you had uninstalled NAV.

Did you do a search of the registry to see if those objects are anywhere else?

I'm having the same problem.... TCP/IP doesnt work at all and I get the same ipmontr.dll error when i try to use netsh. Repairing XP doesnt work nor does uninstalling the Norton reg keys. It all started when I tried to run a windows installer package I made to install several Novell applications (which didnt work) :-(

I've exactly the same problem. Also my PC is very slow to boot ... Anyone found anything ? Thanks.

philterr and natarajnv,

Have you checked the conditions indicated above. The link is
If you're running XP, slow boot problems can be investigated using BootVis. Do a search on the MS site for it.

Good luck. [yinyang] What goes around - comes around. [wink]

I have just recently run into this same problem on a computer I support. I don't think it has anything to do with Norton specifically because the workstation is not running, it does however run Mcafee. I found a quick fix for the problem, but not a permanent solution. You can use System Restore to put the system back to a state where it will work, but no guarantees the same problem won't come back. I'm hoping to catch the problem the next time around to figure out what went wrong.
