How to stack 2650's?

Alright folks,

I need some help, cause I got two different answers from two different people.


I am looking at purchasing 3xProcurve 2650's and I want to stack them.

I was told I could use the 1GB ports to stackthem together. I was then told I would need the mini-GBIC transceivers to stack them.....

which is it???

The 2650 is a 48 port 10/100 switch. It has no built-in Gb port. It does have two 'Dual Personality Ports'; you can buy and install either copper-based Gb links (rj45) or mini-gbic (fiber) into those ports.

do you know if the Mini-gbic transievers come with the cables?

HP website is very unhelpful... so are some of their resellers.

No it does not come with cables. They use industry-standard cables which can be bought about anywhere.

I finally got ahold of someone at HP and the 2650 have 2x 1000 ports used for stackability or I can go with the mini-gbic transivers for fiber connectivity.

If you want to stack them in the 3com XRN or Cisco Stackwise sense were you have dual redundant paths then the answer is no.

You can fix it up to make it look like the switches are stacked by using MSTP (Multiple Spanning Tree) so you have two (or one) root, the top switches switch traffic out the top of the stack and the bottom switches switch traffic out of the bottom of the stack, but beware, never load the path cost, by that I mean, do not be tempted to alter the default STP path cost to influence the desirability of a link because it will affect convergence times by a few seconds, this will have an impact on voice comms
