Well, it's a reasonable question if, say, there was a power outage and one didn't want to wait for the UPS to go flat and let things crash haphazardly.

In Mermail - From the Main Menu select 5 (system status and maint). Then select 1 (system status). then press f10 (softkey to shutdown). The system will ask to confirm - say yes. Wait for status to say shut down. Remove any tape from drive (always a good idea to do a backup to tape first)
Once MerMail is down do a backup on the switch - LD 43 edd
Once the switch backup is complete you can just turn off the breakers on the power cards and then the pedistal if this is a larger switch.
When you power up, do the oppisite and power MerMail up last and make surte there is no tape in MerMail tape drive. It should come back fine - but power supplies are usually the only things that have problem on power up depending on there age.
Also a couple of other notes that are easy to forget. When you power mermail and the switch back up, you'll also want to set the time of day (or at least verify that it's correct) and make sure that your hold music cd player is powered up and playing on repeat all (assuming that you shut everything down for a looonnngggg power outage).
Also, if you happen to have Meridian Max on the swith, back that up as well as any reports in it will be lost. Once everything is up and running, enable to link to mail and the max. If you have an option 11, go to LD30 and enter TEST to insure it came up clean, if you have the other switch options, go to LD 30 and do a LOOP ALL to test the system.
