I've seen when you map a drive inside xp that you can use a web address.

I'm curious to know how to set up a web server and the supporting firewall config to allow clients to connect to a mapped drive from accross the WAN.

Also if you have any experience with this, can you enlighten me to any issues or accolades to this process.

Are all of these users part of the same domain? If so I think you're overthinking this.

If not, what kind of connection are they coming across? A VPN? No VPN, they're just out there so you'd need help setting that up as well?

Can you map a drive for them like:
\\ServerName\FolderYouWantToShare ?
You could do this with a logon script, or with a GPO if they are part of the same domain...
If they log into their own computers locally and then log in through a VPN you could probably just map the drive once on their computer and let them know it wont connect until they come through the VPN.

I am probably so far off... Can I get some more info?

sorry for the vagueness.

ya, if it were a domain environment or even an office environment, heck ya, VPN and regular file sharing.

But what this is, is offering clients of mine access to files on my system in a real time kind of way. I didn't want to set up a VPN really... I've seen some other site (can't remember now) where I just linked to a through a mapped network drive. This intrigued me.

Basically I only want to give my clients access to their own files, but I didn't want an Ftp site or a portal kind of site... I wanted it to be transparent, just another hard drive on their system.

The communication layer is just the internet.

what can you suggest?

I also notice that when I go into the properties of a shared folder, that it has a "Web Sharing" tab...

I thought this might be what I'm looking for but I wasn't sure.

I believe the server I'm looking at has sharepoint services installed, so that may be a factor.

yes. a login will be necessary since each client will have a different set of files and security is a must.
