I have a laptop(windows xp home) and a desktop pc(windows xp pro)
The connection between both of them and to the internet is made through a router d link di 624. Wireless connection for laptop, cable to the PC
Everything was working ok until I have have made some changes:
for both of them I setup the Ip address statically
Pc has 192.168.0.100 and the laptop has 192.168.0.101
for the default gateway and dns servers I have identically values for both of the computers: 192.168.0.1

I can not make any files transfer between the 2 computers ( I was able to do this when my I adresses were dynamically - they are part of the same workgroup).
Now I have internet connection on both but no transfer between them
Can anyone help me how to be able to transfer files between them when I have a static IP?
thanks

You should assign your static address's outside the range of the routers DHCP ip range If it has not been changed the routers starts at 192.168.0.100 and give out 100 address's from 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199 If you are seting static address's I like to use the range of 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.99 for the statice's. Also adding a protocol, I add NetBEUI will sometime fix this type of trouble.

how should I assign the static address outside the DHCP range. I do not know how to do it

Since you have disabled DHCP on the DI624, assigning IPs outside the DHCP range isn't necessary. It is a good idea to do this whenever DHCP is active.

You said you assigned static IPs to both your laptop and your desktop, so assigning an IP outside the DHCP scope is the same procedure. Just be sure to use addresses outside the default 192.168.0.100 through 192.168.0.199 range. I had given two example addresses earlier: 192.168.0.50 and 192.168.0.51

But I am with franklin97355. On your desktop, check the permissions, and if applicable, the security settings for the shares that can't be accessed by your laptop.
