Hi,
I am trying to access the internet via sun solaris. The setting is as follows:
Linksys router is used and the unix box is connected to that router. I also have a nt server connected to the router. I can ping and telnet to sun box. On NT box I can access the internet. While from sun box I can not access the interenet. It is giving me proxy error. When I go to proxy page the setting looks ok. Like HTTP is the router ip address and port is 23.

Please help.
Thanks

Place the IP address for the router into a file called /etc/defaultrouter. Make sure your subnet mask matches the subnet mask for the PC and router. You should be able to see the Sun's subnet mask by using ifconfig -a.

I did that and got the following
flags=863<UP,BROADCAST,NOTRAILERS,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
inet 192.168.0.105 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 192.168.0.255

I am unable to understand what is 192.168.0.255 ip adress. It is out of range to my router dhcp server.
I already put an entry in default router. I can talnet the server from anywhere even outside of the network.
Please help.
Thanks

You will need to have your default gateway address in a file called /etc/defaultrouter like bfitz recommended. Then you will need to create a file called resolv.conf in /etc. In this file you will need to put in the name of your domain (any name) and then the nameserver (dns) addresses of you ISP. For example:
domain my domain
nameserver 19.1.1.1
nameserver 19.1.1.2

Then copy the /etc/nsswitch.dns file to /etc/nsswitch.conf, you can do it like this:
cp /etc/nsswitch.dns /etc/nsswitch.conf

You should then be able to access the net.

Did that but still no luck. When I try to ping any url, I am getting an error saying unknown hosts. Like ping I can ping ipadress within the network.
One more thing after creating thease files do I need to reboot the server?
Thanks

you need to setup DNS resolve.conf and switch on DNS in /etc/nsswitch.conf
Code:
hosts: files dns

Configure your Browser as "directly connected to the internet"...

192.168.0.255: this is not an IP address it is the broadcast address... What is the router's IP Address: It should be 192.168.0.xxx. Can you ping the router from the Sun Workstation? If not, what error messages are you getting. Can you ping the router from you NT Box?

Thanks for all your help. I was missing dns entery in nsswitch.conf.
Once again thaks.

I just loaded solaris 10 and would like to surf the net. I have a hayes external modem and my ISP is earthlink. Can anyone help me?
