How to setup SQL server 2008 developer for DPEG

I am an absolute newbie to SQL, in fact what I am really looking for is a script to follow to set up the SQL software so I can use an SQL database to help manage a massive (to me at least) number of graphics files using D'Peg, a graphics duplicate file manager.

The author of D'Peg assumes that the "SQL for Dummies" book is a sufficient introduction to SQL, even though the book does not discuss setup at all.

If I get the thing working, I will try to get the soultion posted on the D'Peg website, thus shortcutting quistions in this forum. If you don't like that idea, I may be able to get the D'Peg author to post a link back to this thread.

All you have to do to get SQL up and running is run through the installer. Once the database is installed it is up and running. SQL Server runs in the background and there is nothing on the screen that shows that it is running.

It is recommended that you download and install the latest service pack for the version of SQL Server that you have installed.

Thanks, but that is the problem! I don't know how to respond to the questions in the setup (except that I want to enable "Mixed Mode Access", whatever that means.

I did try to run the setup, but I know I did something wrong, because when I tried to create an SQL database file for Dpeg it refused to recognise it as valid.

WhenI got Dpeg working again (had to delete the invalid SQL file first), I tried to import the comma-delimited file into an SQL database, but without knowing what I was doing, that did not work either.

I really need to know 1) what parts/programs I need to install, 2) responses to the choices int the setup dialog, and 3) how to create the initial SQL database file.

Which screens do you have questions about?

Mixed Mode means that you can log into the database through a SQL Login, or a Windows Login.

I am sorry it has taken so long to get back to you, but there
doesn't seem to be time enough in the day to get around to all the
things I have to do.

My system contains 2 main graphics directories:
PHOTOS has 322,160 files in 1,043 folders totaling 38 GB
TOONS has 84,265 files in 388 folders totaling 9.95 GB

Most of the photos are of my family. I told my sister that I could create a CD with all our family photographs on it. She told one of my aunts about it and it and now I am stuck trying to organize a CD with photos from all my relatives down to my aunt and uncles grandkids!

There are a few other directories which contain other miscellaneous graphics files like clip art.

I purchased the SQL Developers edition with only one aim in mind, integrating it with D'Peg, a graphics duplicate file manager, because I was running into a size limit using MS Access for Dpegs database.

I have followed the setup instructions in the book “SQL Server 2008 step by step” by Mike Hotek. This included setting up six user accounts:
SQL2008SBSDE
SQL2008SBSSQLAGENT
SQL2008SBSIS
SQL2008SBSFULLTEXT
SQL2008SBSRS
SQL2008SBSAS

I set up each of them with the same password, and all have
administrative privileges.

I believe I followed the setup instructions exactly, but when I tried to create an SQL database file for Dpeg it refused to recognize it as valid.


Questions:

Do I have to log in as (for example) user SQL2008SBSDE before creating the database file in Dpeg? If so, which account should I use?

In the “Server Configuration” screen, setup offers a button saying “Use the same account for all SQL server services”. This seems to me to be a better way to go considering what I am using it for.

Is there any way I can skip entering passwords for the SQL accounts as I am the only person who has access to the computer?


I am going to do a “clean install” of Windows (XP Pro) next week to hopefully get rid of some bugs that have cropped up after an aborted install of Vista (I plan on waiting for service pack 2 before trying that again).

When I have that done, I will try to install SQL again and take screen snapshots as I go.

I will try to wait on the re-install until you get back to me on the above questions.

Don't bother creating 6 Windows accounts. setup a single account and have all the services run under that one account. That or run all the services under the System account.

No you do not need to log in with the account that the SQL Server runs under before creating the databases with the software.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I will give this one more shot and if it doesn't work, at least I will have the screenshots to show the Dpeg guy I have set it up correctly.
