Hi,

I want to play around with NW6 a bit. So I want to use VMware workstation (on Win2K) to install it a few times.
Mainly to fiddle around with apache/php and mysql..
But the installation hangs when the X-server is starting (is console-one really needed to complete the setup?).

It stops when the gray cross corsor is in view.
Does a commandline switch exist to do the setup text only?
Or another workaround?

TIA,
Loek Gijben

Check out VMWare's Site. There is an NLM you need to load during the install to idle the processors. You can download it from the VMWare support site. Also you need to lower you Win2k stations resolution to 256 color or 8-bit color before loading the Virtual machine. This is less critical after the install, but if you ever run the GUI at the server console you need to turn the color level down again.

when DOS starts (before NNW6) push f8. choose stepbystep confirmation. do not launch autoexec.bat. You will get a dos command prompt. launch server.exe -a . after the server will comes up - edit autoexec.ncf : comment line with startx. reboot the server.

TNX!

The 256 color trick was what dit it. I was confused by mydesktop as all icons were 256 color while the desktop itself actually was still 16-bit color.

After definitely setting it to 256 the graphic installation went as said by VMware's faq.
I don't think Victor's trick will work during installation as it changes autoexec.ncf back to original every time you run install.

Cheers!

Yes, you're right, each time you reinstall a NNW6 - you will get the same autoexec.ncf where startx enabled. BUT! you have a choice to create an answer file to install NNW6 automatically. There you can define correct autoexec.ncf file. :)

Good luck!
