hi, i'm getting confuse with the merlin magix system after i read that manual and some user guide

what i need to do is to install a new phone system at my workplace

items i got
1 control unit and 1 expansion control unit
1 Processor W/CK5 module
3 412 TDL module
1 MERLIN Messing module
1 016 T/R module
1 100 DCD module
2 016 TR module

10+ 4406D+ digital telephone
5+ 4412D+ digital telephone
1 4424LD+ digital telephone

My question:
1. which module i need to install on control unit if i want to setup a phone system for 10 people?

2. where to plug my phone cable(the cable from telephone line provider) to module?

3. How to connect my digital telephone to 412 TDL module?

Well, here's a start:

1. which module i need to install on control unit if i want to setup a phone system for 10 people?

Power supply - Processor - 412 TDL (4 lines - 12 Phones)

2. where to plug my phone cable(the cable from telephone line provider) to module?

The 412 provides 4 Modular Jacks to plug in LOOP START Lines.

3. How to connect my digital telephone to 412 TDL module?

You have to use a 25 Pair Cable, Terminate it (usually on 66 Blocks) and then connect 1 Pair Jumpers between it and the Terminated House Wire that goes to the Jacks in each office.

You don't tell us your experience so I will also add:

Before attempting any of this, you need to know the color code and have the proper tools and an understanding of telephone room design concepts.

Also, does your company want Voice Mail? - Will your company ever use a T1 or a PRI for connectivity to the outside world?

If a T1 or PRI will be used I strongly suggest putting the 100-D module in slot 1, before any other line or station modules.

A quick side observation...

The hardware listed will support:

(36) 4400 series digital telephones
(48) Analog devices (single line telephones/fax machines & so on)
(12) Loop start POTS lines
(24) Inband or (23) ISDN/PRI ports

Based on the list, I'd say you have more than enough parts to support 15 people.

1 question (just for general knowledge)....how many ports does the purchased Merlin Messaging voicemail license support? They were available in 2,4,6,8,10 & 12 port versions.

thx for reply!!(the one i got is 4-port for merlin messaging voicemail)

but i don't know where to start with, for now, what i got is the cable line from phone line provider, and i need to know how to hook the system up.

i'm really newbie to phone system, i need to ask everything here!!

1 - i connected the power supply to control unit, and i put the processor module on slot 1 and 412 TDL module on slot 2

what should i do next?

Not trying to sound demeaning... but start by learning the language and system build/terminology.
On Merlin Legend/Magix systems, the Processor is slot 0. Knowing this will reduce confusion in the future.
Before you place the boards you need to ask the questions...
What are your current needs for connecting phone service?
What is your near future growth potential?
What/how many devices (other than 44xx phones) will be connected? (think fax, modem, creditcard readers, loud bells, etc...)
If you think you would convert from basic POTS trunks to DS1 trunk in the next two years than put the 100DCD in slot 1. Otherwise store or sell the board as excess.
If growth is expected to be minimal over the next couple of years:
Slot 0 - Proc
Slot 1 - 412 TDL
Slot 2 - 412 TDL
Slot 3 - 016 T/R
Slot 4 - Merlin Messaging
This configuration provides up to 8 POTS trunks, 24 44xx phones and 16 analog devices. That gives you some flexibility and growth for a slow growth business model. Rethink the design if your looking at a more rapid growth system.

i think this setup already good for my working place, but after i put all the modules to the control unit, what do i need to do to hook up the system?

Slot 0 - Proc -> not touching it until i need to connect PC
Slot 1 - 412 TDL -> what do i need to connect here? my phone line connect the first slot of the module? or connect the 25 pairs of pin to somewhere around the my phoneline?
Slot 2 - 412 TDL
Slot 3 - 016 T/R
Slot 4 - Merlin Messaging

what do i need to do if i want to make some outgoing calls by using the system with digital phone?

the most confuse part for me is the wiring, if anyone got any good resources, let me learn from there, thx :D

The POTs lines require, at a minimum, single pair cable terminated to 6P2C plugs. 2-pair cable & 6P4C plugs can be used too. The other ends connect to the LEC.

Station ports on the 412 require the use a 25-pair cable terminated to a male Amphenol plug. The other end of the cable can be terminated to standard 66 blocks.

Here is a link to some pictures of the Merlin Magix I installed at my church:

The Merlin Legend & Magix have rather steep learning curves. The Partner ACS, which is well suited for installations with regular POTs lines and, say, under 40 extensions, is much easier to configure & install.

If you find that the Magix installation is becoming a puzzle & a half, seeking out a local Authorized Avaya Business Partner may very well be worth it. [smile]

In addition to Textron68's and Dexman's comments, Avaya has a System Planning Guide document for the Legend R6.1. It is applicable to all Legend/Magix systems for the most part, and should be helpful in your case as a tool for learning and use. You can download it for free from support.avaya.com.

Happy reading!

thx for all suggestion :D

so, where should my phone line(the one from phoneline company)goes to? to 66 block and which pin? or to first jack slot on 412 TDL module?

From top down the jacks are:
Top Power fail (this is the one that is by itself)
Then you have the four that are close together:
Line 4 (804 in default program numbering)
Line 3 (803)
Line 2 (802)
Line 1 (801)

Numbering starts from the bottom port.
