I would appreciate any and all help setting up IBM DS4100 storage. I acquired it from the vendor who sells equipment, but not support. I am not sure if it is IBM-certified. It came complete with 400 GB disks, but all disks were wiped clean.

Some photos of the unit attached.

Start here get the manuals for the user guide, the management software installations for your OS, and set it up for what you want. It would only be IBM certified, if IBM were to come out and certify the installation, or did the installation, unless it was a CSU (Customer SetUp box).

rclarke250, I downloaded files and setup the monitor on the workstation. But what do I do next? The unit itself has all its hard drives wiped clean. There is nothing installed on the unit. I tried to access it through web interface, but router does not see it. I tried to connect it to a separate workstation, but still I cannot find a way to access it. All amber (fault) lights are on on all 14 hard drives and on both controllers (see attached picture). Vendor who sold it to me says it is likely because he deleted data from hard drives. So, I need help to access the unit. Then I would know what to do...

Any idea how to access it?

Your picture shows nothing, how do you have it cabled, and how are you doing management, in-band or out of band? ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/systems/support/system_x_pdf/gc26773301.pdf This should show you how to cable it, and connect to it.

Not meant as a put-down, but is this perhaps another time when recommending "professional help" might be prudent.

Are you connect to a host with fiber-channel?

Wiping the disks does not mean anything with a storage server. What they probably did was switch the disks around and broke the configuration.
This would cause all the drive lights to go amber.

The reason you cannot see the system is more than likely because the ip address of the controllers are not the defaults, if it is set to dhcp and you have a dhcp server it would pick up a dhcp address.

Does this unit have 1 or 2 controllers? Some had 1 and some had 2.

Also the Storage manager software has to be at least close to what the firmware on the DS4100 is.

If you have the DS4100 connected to a host with Fiber-channel you can try to do an in-band management. If you get in that way reset the configuration to factory and the drives should go to green.

Also not meant as a put down, you probably need to do a bunch of reading on DS 4100 Storage servers and all the things that go with management of a SAN. There is way more to it than just plugging it in.
I have been managing SANs for about 15 years and I seem to learn something new every day sometimes in a very bad way.
