I have a system where the max file size allowed is a little over 1.2GB. Users need to be able to create larger files. I'm familiar with ulimit command (i.e. set to unlimited), however I cannot figure out how the users can execute this command. (Keep getting a Not Privilaged message). Is there a system default somewhere that can be adjusted for the max file size?

To set the ulimit for users, you have to be root. The ulimit command was not intended for non-root users to run.

The ulimit parameter for files is 512K. To increase the size, simply edit /etc/default/login and input or change the following entry:

ULIMIT=3000000 # For example.

That should solve your problem. Though you must be root to make this change.

Thanks for the help. Just wanted to let you know that I tried to set the ulimit to unlimited in the /etc/default/login file prior to posting my question and that did not work. Seems you must use some sort of hard count.
