why is it that my win 98 cannot see my mouse.
Mouse is conected to serial port which is pluged in com1 on motherboard. The same mouse with the same serial port lead is working on another pc.
After windows 98 starts it gives a message that it cannot detect mouse .If I try control panel -detect new hardware- it cannot find the mouse either.
Can anyone help, please?

Dead mouse. Dead com port. Disabled com port.
Time to do mouse swap. With power off.
Ribbon reversed or offset on pins on M/B.
How about trying it on com2? Ed Fair

Device manager com ports properties says that they are working properly.
Same mouse is working fine on another PC.
In BIOS i can see both ports have their addresses so I think they are inabled.Tried com 2, same thing.Prety sure about ribbon and pins on M/B.

thanks for reply

You may know this, but just to cover all the bases, the ribbons have one side usually mark with a strip of red. this edge of the cable is inserted close to the 1 pin on the MB which should be clearly labeled. If not then check the MB manufacture for updates, some boards don't support all brands of mice and may not detect your mouse.
