How does one save, on a disk, the entire windows 98 registry and restore it in Windows?

Hello ffaucher,

Simply put for win98, you save the main three components:
[1] system.dat and user.dat in %windir%
[2] each user.dat in user's profile directory individually, if exists
[3] system.ini and win.ini

But, you know you can instruct the system to backup. And also, if default backup copy is not enough, you can increase the number of backup by setting it in system.ini.

This must be some big disk as the registry can approach 20MB.
Run RegEdit. choose export registry and export it where ever you want. If you just export to the desk top, then it is available to copy to a CD. Later if you have a problem, double-clicking the file will reinstall it to the registry.

run regedit and export the entire registry.

you can shrink it quite a bit by .zipping or .raring it afterwards.

to restore it start up in ms-dos mode and use:
smartdrv (this will speed up the process considerably)
then: regedit /c filename.ext (ex. regbkup.reg)

it is good to just do this occasionally anyway because while it is importing this file it is also compacting the registry info making it neater and you should also notice smaller user.dat and system.dat files afterwards.

The system program Scanregw.exe does this backup function, as well a checking the registry for errors.

Click Start > Run and type "scanregw" then click OK. The program will check your registry and offer to do another backup of your registry (in a normally configured system, it does one the first time you start every day and keeps the last 5 good copies.)

Details on scanreg operation are at:

(This says WinME, but its for both Win98 and ME.)

Its handy to know how to use the "/restore" function of scanreg, as it can save you if your registry gets corrupted by allowing you to restore a previous "good" copy.
