I'm trying to get a test system of my current production WSS site. I have a brand new server with SQL 2000 loaded, WSS loaded, etc.

I've backed up my entire production WSS site using Frontpage.

I've restored the entire production WSS site using Frongpage to this new box. I am able to access the sites, etc. however, all of my cross site groups and subsite permissions are gone.

Each subsite is now defaulting to use the permissions of the parent site instead of using unique permissions that were set up on the production machine.

Does anyone know how to do the restore including the permissions for subsites as well as the cross site groups?

Thanks.

Tom.

Hello,

Use the command line tool stsadm.exe to backup your sites/sites collection. By using that tool you will preserve all the user-rights for all sites.

This is how I would do:

On your destination server (the new one) create a new site, but stop at the template choice (you can do this with stsadm.exe aswell)

To backup use stsadm.exe -o backup -url -filename D:\backup\yoursite.dat <-- Just switch this to where you want to put your backup files.

To restore use stsadm.exe -o restore -url -filename D:\backup\yoursite.dat

Check the Windows SharePoint Services Administrators guide to get all the information you need. You can find it at

Thanks Thomas.

When trying to do the restore, I get the msg "The website address is already in use"

I've created and extended the website without a temlate as I've done in the past, so if I were to open a browser, type in the new URL, I would get the template selction screen.

Should I NOT create and extend the site before trying to restore it?

Hey Thomas,

I purchased the book "Windows Sharepoint Services Inside Out" which has TONS of info in it regarding restoring, migrating, etc....

So I figured out how to migrate my entire portal to a new machine and all the permissions remained the same except for the cross site groups are still not there. When in a subsite's "Site Settings" and go into "Manage Users" i see the users and even the cross site groups for that subsite, however, when I go to the root, I don't see any cross site groups set up.

I'll poke around to see if I can find out where they went, or worst case scenario I will just rebuild them.

Thanks for your help!!

Tom.

Hello,

I have also had the "website is already in use". There is a parameter with the stasadm.exe add -overwrite and see if that helps you out.

You should extend the virtual server, but then stop at that. And as you say if you type in the url you should see the template selection page. So when you restore the site add -overwrite at the end of the command line.

Are you running SharePoint Portal Server aswell? Or is it just Windows SharePoint Services?

It is strange that you can see the cross-site groups in the subsite but not in the toplevel website. It isn't just so that they have a different owner than yourself and you will have to go to site settings, go to site administration, manage cross-site groups and chose to show all cross-site groups (Yes I know this is a basic suggestion, but sometimes it can be that easy ;) )

Regards,
Thomas

We're running WSS only.

I did all of this migrating while I was logged onto the server as administrator. The cross site groups were not created by the administrator, but as tdacquisto which is my normal network ID. Just out of curiosity, I logged off and logged in as me and voila! - all the cross site groups now appeared!! SWEET!

Anyway, thanks for your help Thomas.. I appreciate it.
