Hello,

I am very new to SQL so I would appreciate any help that comes my way. I was wondering if anyone has encounterd this problem. I am working with XP machines and MS SQL 7.0. I am trying to restore a backup from one machine server to an entirely different machine server. For some reason I can not restore the database from server 1 to server 2. (I have done this successful before) The second server will not recongnize the backup device. By the way I am using my F: drive which is my zip to back up to the F: drive zip on the other machine. When I proceed with the backup, I do not not see the F: drive, only local files. Can someone guide me as to what I am doing wrong. I really would appreciate your guidance. Thanks in advance. Take care!

Do you have access/permissions to the drives?

Have you 'mapped' the network drive (Right click on the Network Places icon, select Map Network Drive...)?

Thanks for your reply. Yes all my drives are mapped. If I go into "my computer" I can see my F drive and the backup files. As far as access/permissions, I am at a loss there. Do I have to set permissions to this drive and the other drives on my network, and if so, how do I do this. I thought I set them, maybe I didn't set them properly. Thanks again. Sheryl

How are you trying to do the restore? What login are you using, your own?

Usually, these problems are caused by one of two things.
1. the network drive isn't 'mapped'/'shared'
2. lack of permissions

You say you can see the network drive. When you do the restore are you logged in to SQL Server as YOU? Or as some other login? If some other login, does that login have access to the drives? (I'm not sure, but I think a RESTORE is done under the account for the SQL Server Agent service).
