How to resolve a 6527 error in W2K DNS

Can anyone fill me in on what might be the cause of a 6527 DNS error in Win2k dns? Accoring to the message:

Zone <zone name> expired before it could obtain a successful zone transfer or update from a master server acting as its source for the zone. The zone has been shut down.

All this is telling me is the "what" not the "why".
