How to rename CD drive labels?

I would like to rename the default drive label name of my DVD-ROM and CD-RW (i.e. the default name is Compact Disc). How can I do this? I've done it once (through regedit) but now I can't seem to change it again. The label seems to stay with the drive letter so if I were to add another device all the names would be out-of-whack.

Open the My Computer icon and right click on the drive, Properties. Can change volume labels there. Good Luck :)

I have never heard of this being possible. The drive name reflects the name of the CD. I have never been able to change it. When you goto properties the label field is greyed out at can't be changed. It can't even be changed when a CD is in the drive like the way you can change the drive name of A:\. You're only way to do this is to go throught the registry but where in the registry you will find it, I have no clue, I don't know the registry at all. I just tried to search for Compact Disk but it came up empty, but I'm sure if you did it before you can do it again somehow.

Hope this helps! NATE

Do it in DOS just type label and put any name you want.
Up to 11 letters or numbers no space

Hi,

You can't do that. I just tried running a command prompt and loading into real DOS but I keep getting this error:
"Cannot label a network drive"

You can only do this in the registry and you might need a hex converter to do it (like the way you can change the name START on the start menu button)

Hope this helps!

I know this is an OLD OLD Topic, but I had the same problem and I finally figured it out. For ADVANCED XP users only, this involves editing the registry

Goto Start, Run, Type Regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

Find the key called "DriveIcons" if you don't have one, create it

Create a new key for each drive letter
ie C for C:\ D for D:\ etc

Create a key in each drive key called "DefaultLabel" and change the value to whatever you need it to be,

It should look something like this if you did it right

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

-DriveIcons
-C
-DefaultLablel
-D
-DefaultLabel

etc. etc. etc.

If you need any help let me know

Bored, Thanks for replying! After a year I still hadn't found the answer. Do you know if there's a solution for Windows ME?

i think it will work in ME, let me check.... i have no clue if it will.....you could try it and see if it works, make sure you make a backup of you registry first.
