How to remove required field in pre-built list

I'm using a preconfigured list. It has a status field that is set to required and I cannot modify the list items. I wan't to either delete the required field or I would prefer to simply uncheck the required box.

You can't delete the field.

A workaround is to make it non mandatory, then convert the associated newform.aspx page to an xslt view and the that field from the form and from any views of the list
