Some installers enter a shortcut in the right-click menu of Windows XP's start button. Eg. Roxio and Acrobat 8 do so. This modification to the button's context menu cannot be removed through start button's properties. How do I remove these unwanted shortcuts?

Open the registry editor (Start> Run> type regedit and hit Enter).

Navigate to the following registry entry.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

You should see subfolders for the programs that are appearing on the context menu. Delete the subfolders for the entries you want to remove from the context menu. As a precaution, before you edit the registry make sure you create a System Restore point or backup your registry somehow to ensure you will be able to recover if any adverse effects come about.

Thank you to both IllogicallyLogical and Linney for their contribution.

Ill's advice is straigthforward. However, the registry entities pointed to was not exactly those I have in the Start Button's context menu, and even though I removed some of them it did not change the button's context menu.

Then I installed the tool Linney recommends. This tool (Shellview) works very well, and context menu items are easy to find. It turns out that several items are present in duplo, so I assume that is the reason why Ill's method did not work in full.

Disabling unwanted items with Shellview corrected the situation fully.
