Uninstalling the Desktop
To uninstall the desktop perform the following steps:

Log in as root, then open a terminal window.

Run the following command: /usr/sbin/remove-gnome

I did not have a system to try this on so I can't say how it works.

Thanks

I have tried /usr/sbin/remove-gnome, but that script/command/excutable does not exist.

# shutdown -i0 -g0 -y

would you post the result of
# pkginfo | grep -i gnome
please?
