We had several Netware servers running and took one down. It will not be coming up again cause we don't really need it, but now the other servers beep all the time, saying "Unable to communicate with server XYZ". What can I do to stop that?

Two ways:

a) Proper way - boot the server up and onto the network again. Type "LOAD NWCONFIG -DSREMOVE" at the server console and choose the "Directoty Options" menu. Choose the option "Remove Directory Services from this server" and follow the procedure.

b) Additional way, not recommended unless the server is a total loss - load up NDSMGR32.EXE on your PC (can be found in SYS:pUBLIC\WIN32). Find the server in the tree and right click on the object - select delete.

You must not just switch a server off as this can cause problems (which include slowness) with your remaining servers as NDS will always try to communicate with the misisng server unless it is removed from DS properly.

might want to verify this was not the master replica server.
