How to remove a HDD password, if you have forgetten it?

I think you'll need to give us some more info on this one... At what point are you being invited to type in a password? BIOS, DOS screen, Windows? If the last one, what version?

I am having the same problem. Right after the BIOS boots, it says "Hard Drive Authentication System" and asks for a password. No idea what the password is anymore as I have a new computer that I have been using.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

If its a bios password your having a problem with, you have to a) remove the battery on the mobo for a few seconds then replace. or b) some boards have a jumper to perform the same function.

When you reboot the password should be gone.
*WARNING- All bios settings will be reset to default*
you may want to record your current settings first if possible

Hi,
i have the same dilema except with laptops!
I have a hard drive with this Password on it and two laptops that except the hardrive but not the password.
One of the laptop ask for the password straight away (toshiba satellite 320)
The other allows me into bios and dos but needs me to 'change the hdd password to match the user pasword!'

HELP ME PLEASE!

GW :)

if it is the bios that has the paswrod you will need to alter the jumper settings on the board. this will wipe your bios. if you cant locate the correct jumper the you can take out the little battery on the board for a few seconds. this will wipe the bios. you will then need to enter all the bios info again.

According to my manual there are different types of password, i.e. Power-on password, which can be reset and Hard-disk password. Quote:-The hard disk password helps you protect the information stored on your hard disk drive. Even if your hard disk was removed from the computer, the info stored on it cannot be accessed without the hard disk password....now the bad bit.... If you forget the hard disk password, there is no way to reset your password or recover data from the hard disk. Neither an IBM authorized reseller nor IBM marketing rep can make the hard disk drive usable.... this warning is repeated a few times. I am aware that the password is written into the hard disks firmware. It also is referred to on the IBM.com site but I cannot seem to find it. I do know that it says the hard drive will have to be replced. Sorry for the bad news.

regards Michael
