I have a projector connected to a Win2K system.
If the projector is turned on after the computer, the display is unacceptable unless the hardware properties are refreshed simulating that the system was booted after the projector.

Is there a way through VBS or NT scripting to refresh the hardware properties?

I've made it a practice of powering on the projector 'before' powering on the PC/laptop. Never had this problem you've experienced. Perhaps you have your reasons for powering on the projector afterwards.

I know what you mean. I've noticed that as well, but never spent any time on it. It's easier just to teach the users the "proper" way to use the system rather than hack away at it. Less work for me :)

I honestly don't know what would work here besides a reboot. Try end-tasking explorer.exe, then going to file/new task/then type: explorer.exe in and hit enter. It *shouldn't* work, but it may? I dunno. If you find out anything, let me know. Next time around in our training room , i'll play around for a few and see what i can come up with. =) pbxman

go to display properites, settings tab, advanced, displays,
then highlight the device, and select it as primary. this will enable and refresh the secondary display. I have used this method many times.

You will probably have to highlight the monitor selection, as most will not have one for projector.

Try this,
Go to device manager click on the computer icon then click on action and choose “scan for hardware changes”

This should do it.

I've posted instructions for the users as to how to correctly turn on the projector.
Projector first, computer second.

I also included screen shots on 1 sheet of paper for the device manager instructions.

There is only 1 VGA out so the dual monitor solution wouldn't work.

The solution I was looking for was a command line equivalent to device manager rescanning the hardware so I could create an icon for the users to click to refresh the properties.

Device manager and "right-click" is too complicated to most non-techincal users.

Well then, it sounds as if though you have provided your users the information they need. Unfortunately you can't MAKE someone follow directions. The trainee has to be trainable.
I will assure you the method i gave you above works, as I use it very often when connecting my laptop to projectors.

Often times i am "joining" an ongoing presentation with my laptop, so restarting everything is not always a good option because of time.

The dual method will work even with only one VGA out. Remember, one display is connected internally on a laptop.

They may have to use the display switching capability on the laptop to switch to the other display.

On my keyboard, it is a FN/F1 switch. FN standing for function of course.

Good luck. True knowlege is not the knowing in and of itself, but in the knowing of how and where to find the answers.
