1.We only have 1 public ip address and it is for our router.

mail.domain.local is the fqdn of our exchange server what do clients need to their into our address bar in a web browser to get to the owa sight?

2.do i have to open port 80 on the router or can i open another for owa

You should open up ports 80 and 443. Use forms based authentication for better security.

I prefer to configure OWA to redirect http requests to https.
Your users will use where is whatever you have entered into public DNS as your MX record.

I hope you find this post helpful.

great tips! i got the http to https redirect working - great link! why do i need to open 80 and 443 on my firewall? isn't it dangerous to open 80? can i just open forward 443 to the private ip of my exchange/iis server?

what excatly is forms based authentication, does that just means the window that comes up and prompts for username and password?

You are opening the port on the firewall so users can redirect from it. There is no danger since all traffic to that port is redirected to the secure connection.

This just allows your users to not have to remember to use https in their browser. Were you to block port 80, then your users would get an error when trying ot connect if they used http. This way there is no error.

I hope you find this post helpful.
